  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Is progressive rock cool or what?

C'mon; Emerson, Lake & Plamer? Am I right?

LOL, seriously, any thoughts on the genre? Do you find it more edifying than 'regular' secular rock?
I think it's easier to see God in Yes than in Zeppelin. The fact that they are using their talent for it's full potential is well, encouraging. Most of these guys aren't wasting what God gave them (in a worldly sense at least) by making bad choices, or gloriying 'wrong' things. You know what I mean?

I was a total prog-rock snob in college, and I still think some of the older stuff is pretty cool. I don't like the way the label has stuck to the genre; now it seems that if you use classical structures, odd-time signatures or other genre traits you get tagged as progressive. What's really "progressive"-- in the truest sense of the word-- about using any of that stuff these days? "Oh, it's another virtuosic organ solo in 11/8!"

I don't know about seeing God more in one style vs. another; music is all subjective, and where you or I or another prog fan hears some terrific epic a la "Tarkus" someone else might just hear overbloated pretentious wankery...

Lol, I totally agree. There are very few bands in the genre that still break ground.

Q. Is progressive rock cool or what?
A. Very cool

Q. C'mon; Emerson, Lake & Plamer? Am I right?
A. Quite right, my friend.

I'm sorta with you on seeing God in YES more than heavy metal. I think YES can be extremely "spiritual" music at times. Some of their songs are intensely moving on what feels like a different level than just making me want to dance or headbang, etc. Keep in mind that Jon is pretty much into New Age and I believe he worships the Sun, so I don't think we could see exactly GOD in it.

It's just rock for pretty boys. Time was you could be a grotesque ogre with a deformed calf growing out of your hip, but if you were a great rock and roll musician, you were a stud. :)
Ummm...are you thinking of Glam Rock? I'd hardly call any classic progressive rocker that I can think of a "stud".

i actually think jon's a christian now (or professes to be...you know what i mean). i heard him on a recording with the infamous 4HIM (when i used to listen to that **** years ago) on a compilation disc called "streams." my dad's a big YES fan and he got me into them, i definitely think they're one of the best bands of the 70's...so creative.

So, Dream theater isn't spirtual? Psychotic Waltz isn't either?

I'm not sure what you're asking. You mentioned YES as being a spirtual band, and I partially agreed.

I'm not really a fan of Dream Theater. I saw them when they opened for YES once, and their lead singer left me with a bad impression. He would just walk off stage whenever the guitarist or keyboardist(Jordan Rudess, right?) would solo; then he'd take a swig of something and look bored until the solo was done. Maybe I'm wrong about them, because Jordan Rudess is a very excellant keyboardist, and their guitarist was pretty good. Classic YES would still top them anyday.

I really haven't listened to enough Psychotic Waltz to give an opinion.

I agree Drew. I can see God more in Yes than in Zeppelin. I like Zeppelin better but I know exactly what you mean about Yes. And I love ELP! From the beginning is my favorite song. I used to think it was real stupid, then me and my friend started learning how to play it, now I love it! LOL

He was drinking hot water, it's his thing.
He always looks bored to me, really, but that might just be his default expression.

(oh, you said Metal wasn't spiritual, never mind me! lol)

Oh, if it's hot water than it's probably to help his voice out.

Actually, I didn't say Metal wasn't spiritual. I just said YES was a more spiritual band than you're average Metal band. Just an opininion, not a fact.

Amen! Brother. They went through a tough time when they went away from the heavier guitar sound but most of their newer ablumns are better. I am not saying that any of their albumns were bad (except maybe Hold you Fire) but they just were not as good as the older ones.

I like Rush, Dream theater, Spock's Beard, and some Yes. I have not really heard enough of anyone else to make too much of an opinion. Also I like Prog. Rock better than other forms but I do not see God in their music more than other forms. (except true Death Metal which I do not listen to for obvious reasons) But prog. rock is just more artistic than other forms of rock and so i like it. I often get bored with Alternative rock and get too beat up with heavy heavy metal.

Oh and I like many of Tool's songs (not the words) but where would one put them musically?

Tool?

First album is Alt Metal, second album is progressive metal and the third is like heavy progressive rock. I love Tool, and some of the lyrics are very interesting, but some of them are reeaally bad, lol.

They have a new Album later this year.
