  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Just a quick question...my cat seems to be balding. Is this normal for a cat of 12 years, or is there an underlying problem? It started at the base of her tail and is slowly moving up her back. I haven't seen any fleas and someone said maybe she was allergic to something, but this started happening very suddenly and we've been in the same house for 13 years now. A vet suggested maybe it was hypothyroidism. Any help/suggestions would be awesome! Thanks!

Could be quite a few things. Allergies (to fleas or food, they can come on suddenly, might want to consider switching to a food with no corn or wheat as those tend to be the main allergens, also could be an alleric reaction to cleaning products), ringworm, thyroid problem, mange, as well as a whole list of things that I can't think of at the moment, but that should be a pretty good start. First thing to do would be to take the cat to the vet and have her checked for ringworm, mange and do a blood test to check her thyroid. If those turn out to be ok, I would get some flea drops from the vet (even if you see no fleas, it only takes one flea to start a reaction in an allergic cat) and switch her food, depending on what you're feeding her now. I can give you quite a few suggestions for a good, allergen-free food that won't be too expensive. I wouldn't try her on the allergy food from the vet at first as it's very expensive and if it's a corn allergy, you can find a good quality food with no corn for quite a bit less than what you'd pay at the vet. You can always go for allergy tests, but those are fairly expensive, and the elimination method usually works pretty well.

I would NOT encourage waiting this out. Unfortunately, if it is hyperthyroidism, it can cause heart damage and elevated blood pressure which can, in turn, cause blindness (through detached retinas) as well as strokes. I would encourage a thyroid test as soon as possible to at least rule out this possibility since it can cause so many other problems which are potentially fatal. Hyperthyroidism normally occurs in cats 13 years of age or older, since your kitty is 12, this could be the cause. Is there any other issues with your cat, such as a change in her eating habits, attitude or behavior? Is she over-grooming herself or is there no change in grooming habits? If so, I would get her to the vet ASAP to get her checked out
