• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I'm a recently (6 months) diagnosed Aspie who also possibly has some ADHD.
I've had to watch my caffeine intake since I was 12 since it keeps me up into all hours of the night.
The other day, I realized that some of my worst "episodes" (fits brought on by overstimulation) happened after I've had more caffeine than usual (one was after an iced coffee another after two Diet Cokes).
I've read that some people with AS feel caffeine settles them, but has anyone else's experience been that it makes them more anxious and irritable?

I usually have two cups of coffee per day, plus a cup of green tea later in the day. If I have more caffeine than usual, I get extremely hyper and have to really control my tics. It's difficult. I don't get irritable, but my anxiety comes from being too hyper in front of people and trying to control it.

EDIT: I observed my behavior with too much caffeine, and I've noticed I either get extremely tired with too much, or hyper. The later in the day I have my coffee, I get hyper.

I'm NLD and coffee is a huge addiction in our house. I've had to learn to watch the caffeine because it does affect me as far as making me a little too sensitive to my surroundings.

My older brother is HFA/OCD/ADHD has a two cup limit because he gets jittery and loud.

Caffeine makes me really tired. I have no idea why, but if I have a couple of soft drinks I'm nodding off half an hour later. This also applies if I have more than a few squares of chocolate. I don't get hyper on caffeine; never have. It's quite the reverse! Even medication with caffeine in it (for flu etc) usually doesn't keep me awake.

I think I may be one of the Aspies who find caffeine settles them...

I normally have two cups of tea on a slow day. On newspaper delivery days, when I trike 15.5 miles, I limit myself to two liters of cola distributed throughout the day. On those days, any more would get my mind racing, get me very distracted and give me a sudden physical drop, all at the same time.

I'm borderline AS, I mean I'll never be NT or "normal" on the inside, but on a good day I can hold my own and pass for normal. So I live on a knife's edge and it's interesting to see things like stress, caffeine, or exercise (reducing stress) sway me from high functioning to choking when I talk to someone.

When I have a lot of stress in my life and I have caffeine I feel as though I can physically feel the part of my brain that is being overstimulated! Imagine your eyes being stuck wide open - that's how my brain feels. I drink caffeine-free coke and if I'm not too stressed I can have a little decaf coffee. Overall caffeine and I don't get along.

I don't want to derail the thread, but your ticker said you're getting married in 0 days, are you getting married today?
