Whenever I try to open a folder, I get one of those windows asking which program I want to use to open it. I can get around this problem by right clicking and going to "explore," but it opens up more windows and quickly clutters up the screen. I also can't create new folders.

In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Sounds like a virus, or if not, the regular instability creep resulting from continued usage of Windows. Scan the hard drive for viruses (locally if the antivirus software still works, or attaching it to another machine if not). Use a registry fixing tool, such as those by Norton. Last resort: reformat and reinstall.
Windows ME is one of the worst OSes by Microsoft. Windows 98 SE is much better. Or XP, of course.

Hmmm.. Well, for one it doesn't sound like any virus I've ever heard of and two, your last line is a load of bunk. lol. Me was a transition o/s, holding people over and generating revenue for Microsoft until XP came out. Many of the new features destined for XP, including the cartoony look, were incorporated into Me.Heathen Dawn said:

I've deployed Me on countless machines, and used it on my own for quite some time. When people tell me that Me is no good, my experience has taught me just how good those people really are around computers.

Excuses, excuses. Between all the experiencers I stated above, there must have been at least one user with decent hardware, yet ME kept on crashing. And ME kept on crashing on the same hardware that 98 SE churned on with nary a hiccup.
I’ve been around computers since 1984, and I worked for two years as a PC technician (2001–2003, before college).

ME does suck. My friend had a Laptop and a PC w/it...they both crashed, and he could never get them to start back up. He never even downloaded anything...I don't even think he used the internet with them...

i have done many tests with ME and my conclusion is its utter garbage... i have installed different O/S's on the same machine (best hardware you could get at the time.. not cheap either) to see how stable they are.. and ME by far came out the worst. XP and 98se were the top ones, and 2000 wasnt far behind.

it was back when xp was first released (in other words afew years back) so i dont have the results anymore (lost when my hdd died).

ME is the worst operating system I have ever used, I had it on a computer one time, but no more as that computer was kicked one to many times because of ME.
The best way to deal with your problem pee is to hit the windows button + R and type cmd.exe
CD C:/Windows/system32/uninst.exe
then go to Office Max and pick yourself up a copy of Windows XP and walla your problems are over. -_-

Why? Because it crashed constantlly, and just all around sucked.
Since I take SS everytime my computer ****s up right....
I don't rember the hw config it was a standard e-machine like 3 years ago -_-
I am just giving my opinon sorry if you have some kind of odd love for Windows Me, which if you ask 9/10 people who have eve rused it will tell you it really sucks...
