Hey,

I hope that you don't mind me asking here:

I was wondering if anyone has seen an icon of Our Lady of the Rosary. I am looking for one done completely in the Eastern style. I know that this is somewhat of an oxymoron because the title "Our Lady of the Rosary" is totally Western. But, it's worth a shot, I guess.

If you want an Icon done of Our Lady of the Rosary, you will probably need to find a non-Orthodox icon painter to do one for you, or who has done one. As an Orthodox Icon painter, I would never think of doing such an icon because it is unorthodox. I am wondering your intent on wanting such a painting? The rosary is not Orthodox, yet you want a holy Icon of such an image. Perhaps you only view icons as being nice paintings and not as we Orthodox do, windows into Heaven. Icons are not merely paintings done "in the Eastern style." I have included a link to my essay on the meaning of iconography, I would recommend you read it, please.
Peace,
Michael

Iconographer,

I am interested in finding this icon for academic purposes. I am doing a report on the relationship between the Western and Eastern Churches. This would be an example of an unusual exchange. Someone has told me that they have seen such an icon, and I have been trying to find it.

Hey Roald,

I'm not exactly clear on the Rosary or its place in Catholic devotion, so I wasn't sure what to look for, but I think I may have found something that could help you: http://dioceseofjuneau.org/current.htm

It's not a very big picture and it's hard to make out the detail, it looks like the Annunciation to me, but I suppose you could ask if they have a higher resolution version or if you can get a hard copy of this picture.

I was under the impression that icons were written, not painted.

To answer your question, you can say both things. I would say that calling icons 'written' emphasizes to the spiritual aspects of the icon whereas calling them 'painted' emphasizes the technical aspects.

I am an iconographer. The word technically means "icon writer" but the technique used by all iconographers is a paint brush and paint used in a brush like motion, which is by all definitions of the word, painting. The matter of write or paint is really just a translational issue.

If there is such an Icon, it was not done by an Orthodox Iconographer. Yes, it is very unusual, because we do not pray the rosary, or believe many of the doctrines which are taught along with the rosary. I find it very unusual that people who are not Orthodox want to take something inherently Orthodoxy, namely iconography, and use it to depict their specific religions?

Come on Iconographer, it was the West that maintained the Tradition of iconography while the East went through their iconoclastic periods. Iconography is not the sole property of the East.

No, the west did not maintain the Tradition of Iconography, actually it was two of our Fathers: St. John of Damascus, and St. Theodore the Studite as well as the 7th Ecumenical Council (2 Nicea) which defended the Iconodule positions. I stand by the teachings of the Orthodox Church.

Any debate of who owns the tradition or defended it is liable to get this thread closed pretty quick.

How about rather than argue or debate (which I know we are not doing ;) ) we celebrate the fact that we have them, IIRC in both our Traditions. We can also state that it was a (somewhat united) Church that triumphed over the iconoclastic heretics.

Okay, good point. If I do find such an icon, I will investigate whether it is done by an Orthodox iconographer or not. That would determine exactly what type of praxis exchange was going on.

Thanks!

:yikes:

To many negatives in my head at once.

Normally, I hate to go back and edit, prefering to let my words stand, but that is a bad, stupid, misleading error on my part ...

Thanks.
