  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

oh try not to be so, I don't know the word I'm looking for... a stickler. Just live your life doing what you know is right.

Telling ppl they are pretty, smart, etc or that you are proud of them is being nice and showing them that you appreciate them and they feel accepted and cared for. Like they are doing something right.

Its not a bad thing.

Paul says in the bible, to be well balanced. We have to seek balance in all things and this is one area of balance we need. To be nice and supportive with out going to either extreme end.

There is a difference between the two.

Being proud of someone is an expression of love and appreciation for their accomplishments or for who they are as a person.

Having pride for one's self can be a way of also expressing love for one's self - like accomplishing something - so long as it doesn't denegrate, insult, or diminish those around you. Some folks are puffed up with so much pride that they think they are better than others or become stubborn in their own pride that they lose a sense of humility.

So pride is wrong when its a behavior that affects those around you in a negative way. You can be proud of yourself when you've accomplished a milestone so long as it doesn't diminish your humility and treatment of others.

i think it was C.S.Lewis in Screwtape Letters who talks about false huumility

some people think humility is thinking you are horrible
true humility is taking joy in something for what it is, if it was done by you or by anyone else being just as happy with it

Bad pride is also when you do things out of spite.

If you think about it every sin we commit is rooted in pride. and false piety and humility is over stating ones weakness to the point were its become their own self identity.

Humility and pride are lines that are often blurred.

Pride is also not asking for help and prayers when you need them.

I have this book in my library, and there is good material written on pride, but I cannot find an online book to quote it, other than this excerpt:

In his classic work entitled "The Spiritual Life: A Treatise on Ascetical and Mystical Theology," The Very Reverend Adolphe Tanquerey, S.S., D.D., has this to say regarding the pride of intellect:

"..pride of intellect which is more dangerous and more difficult to overcome than the pride of will...is the pride that renders faith and obedience to superiors difficult.

One wants to be self-sufficient; the more confidence one has in one's own judgment the more reluctantly does one accept the teachings of faith, or the more readily does one submit these to criticism and to personal interpretation. In like manner, one so trusts to one's own wisdom, that it is with repugnance that others are consulted, especially superiors. Hence, regrettable mistakes occur.

Hence, comes also obstinacy of judgment, resulting in the final and sweeping condemnation of such opinions as differ from our own. Herein lies one of the most common causes of strife between Christian and Christian, at times even between Catholic writers. St. Augustine calls those who cause unfortunate dissensions, destructive of peace and of the bond of charity, 'Dividers of unity, enemies of peace, without charity, puffed up with vanity, well pleased with themselves and great in their own eyes.'" (p. 388, citing St. Augustine, Sermo III Paschae, n.4)

I don't think people who have this disorder are fully aware of their pride. The Holy Spirit has a lot of work to do over a long period of time before the vice is fully recognized and repented of. "Pride goeth before a fall" - Sometimes, due to His immense love for the proud soul, God will bring about a serious failure to awaken the person to the true disposition hidden within his heart.

As for the innocent pride in your own or others' accomplishments, this is perfectly acceptable if we always remember to keep a grateful heart, recognizing that God's grace has enabled the good works we esteem.

humility is difficult. i think all of humanity has some level of pride - but avoiding it and putting others first in all things [God in top spot] is a challenge some face more than others.

I read the Lord really doesn't like people with pride, it's why the devil got casted out of heaven. So my question is, is being prideful, the same as being proud of someone? Because to me they seem vastly different yet googling the definitions i'm having trouble differentiating.

Hello Friendly Josh,

Have you ever wondered how Satan can tempt so many people in the world yet we never see the red tailed, horned demon? How does he get into your head? How does Satan talk to us as he talked to Eve to tempt her?

The bible is highly symbolic. There really was not a talking serpant in the garden of Eden and nor will there be a dragon at the battle of Armageddon. Satan, the serpent, the dragon are all symbolic for man's evil pride. It is man's evil pride which convinced Eve that she would not die for breaking the commandment of God.

The human pride, which human pride is Satan, that you want to watch out for is the pride which tells you that you are way to valuable to God for God to damn your soul to hell for sin.

The scripture you are talking about, where Satan is cast out of heaven, is really the human pride of King Nebuchadnezzer of Babylon. King Nebuchadnezzer is God's 'servant' that God left to rule Israel after their fall from heaven to earth. Israel fell from heaven to earth from earth. It is Israel's evil human pride which fell from grace.

NAB LAM 2:1
How the Lord in his wrath has detested daughter Zion! He has cast down from heaven to earth the glory of Israel, Unmindful of his footstool on the day of his wrath. The Lord has consumed without pity all the dwellings of Jacob; He has torn down in his anger the fortresses of daughter Judah; He has brought to the ground in dishonor her king and her princes.
NAB 2KI 24:18

The LORD’S anger befell Jerusalem and Judah till he cast them out from his presence.
Satan was in the Garden of Eden with Adam and Eve at the time of man’s fall. The tree of eternal life was in the Garden of Eden (GEN 2:9). Well! Why didn’t Satan, who seemed to know his way around the Garden of Eden, just eat from the tree of life? Then Satan could have harassed God for all eternity? The reason is that Satan is man's evil human pride. It is Adam and Eve's evil human pride that tempted them into sin. Satan, which Satan is man's evil human pride, fell along with Adam and Eve, at there fall to earth from Eden, which Eden is on earth yet described as heaven. It is in the Garden of Eden that man’s evil pride, which grows into a great multitude of evil sins, was conceived. The great cedar of evil human pride, which is Satan, that falls at Armageddon, was conceived in the Garden of Eden.

NAB GEN 3:4

But the serpent said to the woman: “You certainly will not die! No, God knows well that the moment you eat of it your eyes will be opened and you will be like gods
NAB SIR 10:12

The beginning of pride is man’s stubbornness in withdrawing his heart from his Maker; For pride is the reservoir of sin, a source which runs over with vice; Because of it God sends unheard-of afflictions and brings men to utter ruin.

God's 'servant' Nebuchadnezzer, falls from power/grace/heaven at our future battle at Armageddon. St. Michael and his angels take him down. It is King Nebuchadnezzer, put in power by God, still ruling over the world through his succeeding world dominant leaders of today, who takes a fall from 'heaven'/power, at Armageddon in the future era of the Apocalypse. Jesus will take over as 'Morning Star' to Rule the post-Armageddon world.

Human pride is our enemy and human pride is Satan. It is human pride which will take its fall at Armageddon.
NAB ISA 14:12 The King of Babylon.

How have you fallen from the heavens, O morning star, son of the dawn! How are you cut down to the ground, you who mowed down the nations! You said in your heart: “I will scale the heavens; Above the stars of God I will set up my throne; I will take my seat on the Mount of Assembly, in the recesses of the North. I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will be like the Most High!” Yet down to the nether world you go to the recesses of the pit!

When they see you they will stare, pondering over you: “Is this the man who made the earth tremble, and kingdoms quake? Who made the world a desert, razed its cities, and gave his captives no release? All the kings of the nations lie in glory, each in his own tomb; But you are cast forth without burial, loathsome and corrupt, Clothed as those slain at sword-point, a trampled corpse. Going down to the pavement of the pit, you will never be one with them in the grave.” For you have ruined your land, you have slain your people!

StevenMerten if what you were saying were true, then the devil wouldn't exist, neither would heaven or hell. The bible clearly says he was an angel, one of pretty high status, and was casted out of heaven with 1/3rd of the angels due to his pride and him wanting to be God himself. And that they're all demons in hell now, considering the book I read, where Josefa visited hell, many times, and had the devil torture her, literally on earth and in hell, i'd say it absolutely exists. So sorry friend I do not agree that it is symbolic inregards to that. And to be honest, to say otherwise almost sounds like you don't want anyone to believe in hell, perhaps i'm misreading?

Also to answer your question as to why the devil didn't eat from the tree of life, it's quite simple really. The only power the devil has is from God, so he could of easily just of made it impossible for him to eat from it.

Hello FriendlyJosh,
I do believe in hell. I believe a great number of the prideful go there. This is what the Blessed Mother of Fatima indicates.

Please give me book and verse from the Bible of what you are talking about. Are you talking about the Book of Revelations which is about our future era of the Apocalypse?

Do you believe that Israel was literally cast out of heaven to earth like Satan?

Scripture describes Adam and Eve as being in heaven. It was the Garden of Eden, which was on earth that Adam and Eve were actually in. However, scripture paints a picture of heaven upon the Garden of Eden, which is on earth. 'The holy mountain of God', 'fiery stones' are phrases in the bible about Adam and Eve in Eden which pertain to being in the presence of God. Adam and Eve were in the presence of God, but they were on earth, not in heaven. It is actually Adam and Eve's evil human pride, through sin, which falls from 'heaven' to earth. Adam and Eve's evil human pride, Satan, falls with them when they fall from Eden, which is described as heaven, to earth.
NAB EZE 28:13

In Eden, the garden of God, you were, and every precious stone was your covering (carnelian, topaz, and beryl, chrysolite, onyx, and jasper, sapphire, garnet, and emerald); Of gold your pendants and jewels were made, on the day you were created. With the Cherub I placed you; you were on the holy mountain of God, walking among the fiery stones. Blameless you were in your conduct from the day you were created, Until evil was found in you, the result of your far-flung trade; violence was your business, and you sinned. Then I banned you from the mountain of God; the Cherub drove you from among the fiery stones.
The Pharaoh's evil human pride puts him in heaven. At least in the Pharaoh's mind he thinks he is a god. It is from earth that the Pharaoh's evil human pride falls from heaven into the abyss.
NAB EZE 31:14

Thus no tree may grow lofty in stature or raise its crest among the clouds; no tree fed by water may stand by itself in its loftiness.
For all of them are destined for death, for the land below, For the company of mortals, those who go down into the pit.
Thus says the Lord GOD: On the day he went down to the nether world I made the abyss close up over him;
I stopped its streams so that the deep waters were held back. I cast gloom over Lebanon because of him, so that all the trees in the land drooped on his account. At the crash of his fall I made the nations rock, when I cast him down to the nether world with those who go down into the pit. In the land below, all Eden’s trees were consoled, Lebanon’s choice and best, all that were fed by water. They too have come down with him to the nether world, to those slain by the sword; those who dwelt in his shade are dispersed among the nations. Which was your equal in glory or size among the trees of Eden? Yet you have been brought down with the trees of Eden to the land below. You shall lie with the uncircumcised, with those slain by the sword. Such are Pharaoh and all his hordes, says the Lord GOD.
As the House of Judah is driven out of heaven by God's 'morning star' king Nebuchadnezzer of Babyon, Satan is driven out of heaven by Archangel Michael. Adam and Eve, the Pharaoh, king Nebuchadnezzer, and Satan, are all described as falling from heaven in scriptures. It is evil human pride, through sin, which is taking the fall from heaven to earth, from earth, in all these cases. Man's evil pride and power are at the core of their 'fall from heaven'. Man falls from the presence of God to earth from earth due to his evil pride through sin.

NAB PRO 16:18

Pride goes before disaster, and a haughty spirit before a fall. It is better to be humble with the meek than to share plunder with the proud.
Ezekiel uses king Nebuchadnezzar’s dream of the felled tree of king Nebuchadnezzar’s evil pride to warn the Pharaoh and the Prince of Tyre. In Ezekiel 28 and 31, Ezekiel paints the face of Satan on the evil human pride of the kings of the earth.

NAB EZE 31

On the first day of the third month in the eleventh year, the word of the LORD came to me: Son of man, say to Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, and to his hordes: What are you like in your greatness?
Behold, a cypress (cedar) in Lebanon, beautiful of branch, lofty of stature, amid the very clouds lifted its crest.
Waters made it grow, the abyss made it flourish, sending its rivers round where it was planted, turning its streams to all the trees of the field.
Thus it grew taller than every other tree of the field, and longer of branch because of the abundant water. In its boughs nested all the birds of the air, under its branches all beasts of the field gave birth, in its shade dwelt numerous peoples of every race. It became beautiful and stately in its spread of foliage, for its roots were turned toward abundant water. The cedars in the garden of God were not its equal, nor could the fir trees match its boughs, Neither were the plane trees like it for branches; no tree in the garden of God matched its beauty. I made it beautiful, with much foliage, the envy of all Eden’s trees in the garden of God.
Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: Because it became lofty in stature, raising its crest among the clouds, and because it became proud in heart at its height, I have handed it over to the mightiest of the nations, which has dealt with it in keeping with its wickedness. I humiliated it.
Foreigners, the most ruthless of the nations, cut it down and left it on the mountains. Its foliage was brought low in all the valleys, its branches lay broken in all the ravines of the land, and all the peoples of the land withdrew from its shade, abandoning it.
On its fallen trunk rested all the birds of the air, and by its branches were all the beasts of the field.
Thus no tree may grow lofty in stature or raise its crest among the clouds; no tree fed by water may stand by itself in its loftiness.
For all of them are destined for death, for the land below, For the company of mortals, those who go down into the pit.
Thus says the Lord GOD: On the day he went down to the nether world I made the abyss close up over him;
I stopped its streams so that the deep waters were held back.
NAB GEN 3

The Fall of Man
Now the serpent was the most cunning of all the animals that the Lord God had made,</B> the serpent asked the woman, “Did God really tell you not to eat from any of the trees in the garden?” The woman answered the serpent: “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden; it is only about the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden that God said, ‘You shall not eat it or even touch it, lest you die.’” But the serpent said to the woman: “You certainly will not die! No, God knows well that the moment you eat of it your eyes will be opened and you will be like gods who know what is good and what is bad.”
NAB EZE 28

The Prince of Tyre.
Thus the word of the LORD came to me: Son of man, say to the prince of Tyre: Thus says the Lord GOD:
Because you are haughty of heart, you say, “A god am I! I occupy a godly throne in the heart of the sea!”— And yet you are a man, and not a god, however you may think yourself like a god.
Oh yes, you are wiser than Daniel, there is no secret that is beyond you. By your wisdom and your intelligence you have made riches for yourself; You have put gold and silver into your treasuries. By your great wisdom applied to your trading you have heaped up your riches; your heart has grown haughty from your riches— therefore thus says the Lord GOD: Because you have thought yourself to have the mind of a god, Therefore I will bring against you foreigners, the most barbarous of nations. They shall draw their swords against your beauteous wisdom, they shall run them through your splendid apparel. They shall thrust you down to the pit, there to die a bloodied corpse, in the heart of the sea. Will you then say, “I am a god!” when you face your murderers? No, you are a man, not a god, handed over to those who will slay you. You shall die the death of the uncircumcised at the hands of foreigners, for I have spoken, says the Lord GOD.
Thus the word of the LORD came to me: Son of man, utter a lament over the king of Tyre, saying to him: Thus says the Lord GOD:
You were stamped with the seal of perfection, of complete wisdom and perfect beauty. You became haughty of heart because of your beauty; for the sake of splendor you debased your wisdom. I cast you to the earth, so great was your guilt; I made you a spectacle in the sight of kings. Because of your guilt, your sinful trade, I have profaned your sanctuaries, And I have brought out fire from your midst which will devour you. I have reduced you to dust on the earth in the sight of all who should see you. Among the peoples, all who knew you stand aghast at you; You have become a horror, you shall be no more.
Thus the word of the LORD came to me: Son of man, look toward Sidon, and prophesy against it: Thus says the Lord GOD: See! I am coming at you, Sidon; I will be glorified in your midst. Then they shall know that I am the LORD, when I inflict punishments upon it and use it to manifest my holiness.
Into it I will send pestilence, and blood shall flow in its streets. Within it shall fall those slain by the sword that comes against it from every side.
Thus they shall know that I am the LORD. Sidon shall no longer be a tearing thorn for the house of Israel, a brier that scratches them more than all the others about them who despise them; thus they shall know that I am the LORD. Thus says the Lord GOD: When I gather the house of Israel from the peoples among whom they are scattered, then I will manifest my holiness through them in the sight of the nations. Then they shall live on their land which I gave to my servant Jacob; they shall live on it in security, building houses and planting vineyards. They shall dwell secure while I inflict punishments on all their neighbors who despised them; thus they shall know that I, the LORD, am their God.

i'm referring to the book "The way of divine love" where Jesus uses Josefa as his victim soul to suffer so that other souls could be saved. She was tortured by the devil quite frequently, and taken to hell aswell as purgatory. But now i'm confused, if you believe the devil was just a symbol for mans pride, and not real, then who's in hell? See it just doesn't work, the devil literally exists, no doubt about it. I do agree mans pride is a bad thing, as the Lord in the book I mentioned above said so, many times. Humbleness and humility are what he enjoys, and he can't stand mans pride.
