Does anyone else enjoy watching Pride & Prejudice?

I'm referring to the movie-length version starring Kiera Knightley; I haven't seen the other version yet... I've watched it over, and over, and over again... I think it's mainly because I identify so much with several of the characters, especially Lizzie.

Does anyone else share my appreciation for it? And what's your favourite line? For me, it has to be: "Believe me, Mr Collins, no one would suspect your manners to be rehearsed". Lol!

I have never understood why so many modern women read Jane Austen for pleasure. Does her work have historical and literary merit? Absolutely. Do I want to spend my free time fantasizing about an era where women were second-class citizens and women without husbands were shunned by society? Umm...no.

lol, i guess to an extent women are still treated as second class citizens and they can be still pressured to marry in order to conform with society and family ideals.

meh... i just enjoy reading classics. Before i started reading Pride & Prejudice, i read Jane Eyre, Pilgrims Progress, and Great Expectations. Doesn't mean i'm enthralled with the times or societies those stories were set in or wish i had been a part of them. the stories are just interesting to me

Yeah, I think it's because it's such a foreign world to us, that is interesting to explore through watching movies and reading books set in that era

I liked it...although I would recommend you seeing the BBC version, also. I saw the BBC version first...didn't expect to like the new one very much, but I was surprised at how good it was. In some ways, it was superior to the BBC film, in my opinion.

P&P is good, but Sense and Sensibility was always my favorite...even though it is pretty melodramatic.

I haven't yet seen the Kierra Knightly version, but am sure looking forward to it...agree, the BBC series was really good...

I think that Jane Austen holds a lot of appeal among women because of the wit in her novels...that and the portrayal and resolution of family dilemmas is pretty much applicable today, even if our social structures are a little different.

I can also recommend Mansfield Park as a good read...

I've always been a literature geek since I was little. I have two versions of P&P as well as S&S, Emma, Persuasion, and two versions of Jane Eyre (written by Bronte, but often lumped in with J Austen for some reason).

I've got the BBC version of P&P as well as the newer version. I do recommend seeing the BBC one if you like the story, because it is MUCH longer and reveals a lot more of the story, and it's done very well. However, artistically, I like the new one much better...it's visually gorgeous and much more passionate.

Why do women enjoy J Austen stories? I don't think it has much to do with the historical, political, oppressed-female factor, although that is interesting to behold and think about. It's because the women rose above, as someone said in an earlier post...they refused to sit around moping about their status...they remained dignified and strong, and managed to find love despite all that stood against them. And if you've ever read or seen "Emma", she was very different from the typical Austen girl; she was rich, not poor, but her own hilarious antics kept her from finding love till it was almost too late.

And best of all...the male characters are soooooooooooooooooooooooo romantic...that's really all it takes lol.

It's my favorite book AND my favorite movie. Since I don't watch movies more than once, usually...you may be able to tell what I think of it. I've watched it at least three times.

I love Sense and Sensibility! I often get the song that Maryann plays on the piano when Brandon sees her for the first time stuck in my head.

I like P&P, I've seen the BBC and recent version once. While more informative and inclusive, the BBC version is SUCH a snoozer to me. It took me weeks to get through it.

Meh, I could take it or leave it.

I love to see the whole night and day difference in how things were then compared to now. Also how there were gentlemen and ladies. It was (for the most part) normal to be polite and kind.
Also the vocabulery and speech was so interesting. Poetry in everyday discussion..
But I wouldn't want to have to wear the attire 24/7..
