FORCED ABORTION

President George W. Bush has withheld $25 million in funding from the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) because of that agency's support of forced abortions and forced sterilizations in China and other nations. The President transferred the funds to a State Department program to fight human trafficking and prostitution. Previously the President had transferred $9 million that was to go the UNFPA to the US Agency for International Development for a reproductive health program. So far this year President George W. Bush has move 11 percent of the $300 million Congress allotted to the UNFPA to other US agencies who do not promote abortion. What would John Kerry have done?

ABSTINENCE GRANTS

On October 5th President George W. Bush announced $100 million in new grants for abstinence-focused programs as part of the $15 billion Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief. Of the eleven organizations receiving grants nine are faith-based. The grants will help these faith-based organizations teach children in AIDS plagued nations such as Ethiopia, Haiti, Tanzania and Zambia to avoid behavior putting them at risk for HIV. Previously the President has said, "I think our country needs a practical, effective and moral message. In addition to other kinds of prevention, we need to tell our children that abstinence is the only certain way to avoid contracting HIV. It works every time." What would John Kerry have done?

I would really like to see those "studies" that show people are more likely to get a disease and get pregnant if only taught abstinance. I'm pretty sure in reality the teen pregnancy rate and the rate of STD infections has sky rocketed since we started "Sex Education" with our youngsters. Will do a little more looking.

By what measure? Overall amount of sex?

What should be painfully obvious is that there is a Real Live Crisis in Africa. Millions have HIV. Millions more will get HIV. Condoms are a good, but not perfect, way to prevent HIV transmission. Abstinence only works if you get through to virtually everyone. Condoms are relatively easy to learn to use correctly. Abstinence is really hard to implement large-scale because people like to have sex; in fact, there's a pretty strong biological drive to have sex. Many people don't care to be guilted into abstinence by being told that a God they may not even believe in disapproves.

This whole thing smacks troublingly of religious opportunism - to the degree that to withhold condom education is downright criminal. Get the freaking epidemic under control first. Then you can go in there and lay guilt trips as thickly as you like.

Reputable reports have clearly said the evidence proves abstinence works for two years - usually between the ages of 14-16 and then it is discarded; without a solid grounding in sex education these children are at risk for pregnancy and std's.

When faith-based groups lie, obscure, or falsely represent the facts regarding sexuality they lose all credibility, not only about their claims regarding gays and abstinence among teens, but that their faith is trustworthy. It seems to me that, if your program works for two years, you should take credit for the two years that you've kept kids from being sexually active. Why present false information when the truth is a positive result, even if it's only of a short shelf life?

I am not against sex education for teens in any way, just the way it is presented. Ideally this would be done by the parents, but we do not live in an ideal world. I feel kids should be taught abstinance as their first and best option to aviod the down falls of pre-marital sex, and then they should be taught about other less effective options, while pointing out that no matter what kind of "Safe Sex" you practice you open yourself up to risk of STD's or Pregnancy.

Also these days I'm not sure guilt is the reason we should be promoting abstinance and I do not think anyone has said that. No one can argue there are serious risks to your health and life, as well as determental effects on society, if you choose to have sex with multiple partners.

Bush appeared at least twice at abstinence rallies with McIlhaney in the past two years, and publicly frowns on condom use. In March, when a new Texas law exempting over-the-counter medication from taxes turned out to make condoms tax-free too, he said through a spokesman at the time that he "never wanted condoms to be exempt."

"The governor supports abstinence education and believes it is an important part of encouraging young people to be responsible," Bush spokesman Ray Sullivan said Thursday when asked to characterize Bush's position on sex education. " He calls for increasing abstinence funding at the national level to at least the level of contraception funding." When asked what abstinence education has done for Texas teens, Sullivan said teen births in Texas were lower than the national average. But that isn't true, in fact quite the opposite.

So far, at least, it looks as though abstinence education hasn't kept Texas teenagers from doing what comes naturally stupidly. On the contrary,
Texas has the fourth highest AIDS rates and ranks second, behind Mississippi, in births among teens ages 15 to 17, according to a new study by the Annie E. Casey Foundation that draws on federal statistics. Chlamydia and gonorrhea rates are among the highest in the nation, according to Texas Department of Health statistics, and have increased since Bush became governor in 1995.
In fact, says Peggy Romberg, director of the Texas Family Planning Association, "I don't think there's any data that shows the abstinence education programs are working at all. There are concerns that no one's evaluating them to see if they do work, which is the normal thing for any federal or state program."

Uganda has been using the ABC method (abstinence, being faithful, condoms) and reduced their percentage of AIDS infections by 30% since the 1980's.

http://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=34044

there are other articles about Uganda's program when I searched google with Uganda+abstinence+AIDS , but the above link claims to be more accurate than the previous results published by the World Health Organization. I understand that it wasn't just the government leaders involved, but their village voices and various media joined in launching a campaign to encourage teens to delay sexual activity and find a monogamous partner.

Can you imagine how much of the world would have less struggles with HIV and other STD if the media, television programs, singers, and actors were promoting more family-oriented style concepts like they did when I was just a child?

If the C was removed from the forumula, do you think it would be as effective? That's the issue. Where abstinence only is taught, the success rate is not as spectacular. There is another thread here that is discussing that clergy are trying to prohibit condom distribution as part of the formula in Africa. Do you think that would be as effective.

By not teaching comprehensive sex education because of morality, it hurts those involved. I personally think that it is immoral to take this approach.

Sex education doesn't mean that the kid is going to go out and have sex. It doesn't mean that they aren't going to go out have sex either, but at least if they do, they are informed.
Teaching abstinence only doesn't mean that the kid is not going to go out and have sex. It doesn't mean that the kid will go out and have sex, either.

At least if the kid is educated and informed of the consequences of their actions THEY can make the informed DECISION. The sex ed class doesn't decide for them. THEY decide for themselves.
Ignorance is not bliss when it comes to a child's health, and to believe one way is the only way to teach is setting them up to play russian roulette with their lives.
Sex ed (covering: benefits of abstinence, stds, methods of protection, statistics, etc) should be taught in schools, but the morality behind it all should strictly be the parents job.

Of course abortions(or have one heck of an adoption agency) should be force in places like China, and India, and America!

Infact, the world governments should create a co-operative legal system that only allows each family to have 2 children.

Still, do you know what the population in 2050 will be? 12 BILLION

Do you know what the sustainable human population is? 1.5 BILLION

Teach the kids about all aspects from having sex....Give them complete sex education and they will act more wisely. Tell them that abstinence is the best thing and they will do the exact opposite. We are talking about young curious people who start to question all that adults decide for them. In the Netherlands we have the lowest rate of teen abortions because they learn also about condoms and the birth control pill. And parents do not deny that their kids have sex and ask them if they have safe sex......Instead of hiding it, let it out. Guess what, the age having sex in the teens is the same as in the USA....Our teens just realize better how NOT to get pregnant or ill because sex is something they can talk about, without someone preaching that they have to stay abstinence until marriage.....(which doesn't protect you 100 % from not contraction STD's because not all spouses are monogamous....). Be realistic...teens have sex. Simple. It is a part of their quest who they really are.

OUCH......Can you really force someone to do that?....Isn't that called eugenetics? Who are you to decide how much children someone wants. Of course the population is a BIG problem, but educate people to be more aware of these things, instead of dictate them to do something against their will. How awful would it be for a person who is against abortion to force this upon her? It is like forcing someone to believe what they don't want to believe.......If people learn about respect, they learn about chosing wisely for children and raise them the right way......

Maybe we should start killing off all the old people too? How about laws that say if you have children you have to commit suicide when they turn 18? You know...to keep the population down.
