A Solar Powered Radio--might let you know what else is left
DIY Solar Powered Radio for $5 | Survivalist Daily
I listen to this podcast regularly:
Survival Podcast
Available through iTunes too, this isn't your "lone wolf with gas mask & AR" sort of podcast but a community based podcast that speaks to all sorts of prepping, homesteading, and general preparedness. Frankly not much talk about guns or "tactical" stuff; mostly a lot about gardening and storing and beekeeping and aquaponics and info about national/international issues. I've been listening for about a year and always intrigued with new information. Language can be a bit salty at times but overall highly recommended for the prepper crowd.
Wow! I've seen this stuff on tv... a show called "Doomsday Preppers" very interesting! I think everyone should partake. Better safe than sorry!
Would the solar powered radio be effected by an EMP strike?
The solar powered radio is only useful if radio transmitters are still working.
Thanks for the link. I doubt that doomsday stuff and a lot of gunfire will be the norm in most cases. I think you hit the nail on the head when you speak of day to day survival and having the ability to live off of the grid.
My father during the Great Depression Lived in Philadelphia. Living often meant collecting coal nuggets, huddling together and eating once or twice a day then counting your blessings from the Lord. He Then was drafted for WWII. The items shared here are great. Learning from history can help, too.
Any thoughts or stories?
Yeah Spirko speaks often that things like losing a job or a weather event will be where one's preps will mostly be used, not as dramatic or romantic as a nuclear war or zombie invasion but rubber-hit-the-road reality..and he has little patience for stuff like the Doomsday Preppers show (I've not seen it but heard about it)..but he doesn't discount larger events, particularly economic.
I do watch Doomsday Preppers but not because of the hype or the far-fetched scenarios. However, I've picked up a few good ideas by watching. Probably the most important "prep" that I never feel that I have an over-abundance of is water. It's cheap to collect but probably the most important substance on earth and probably the substance that most folks are lacking.
I remember reading on a survival blog some years back how most people, when faced with a survival-type situation, will seek out food first, then shelter, then water. Which the author said was unfortunate, given water should be a far higher priority than food and possibly higher than shelter.
I saw the film "The Road" about what people eat when the food runs out after a doomsday event.

Looks to be a pretty interesting movie. Here's Part 1 in a Youtube clip:
I'd die before turning to cannibalism.
One of my favorite hobbies is "prepping." That is to say that I enjoy preparing for unforeseen disasters; possible economic collapse; foreign invasion; terrorist activity; or something as simple as unemployment. Although I place my full trust in God I believe that God wants us to use our talents and wisdom in times of trial, trouble, or tribulation.
My wife and I stock up on food, water, and other resources as time and money permits. Our vehicles are equipped with emergency supplies. I used to belong to a "survivalist" forum (several actually) where prepping and survivalism was extensively discussed. My goal is to be able to live off of "the grid" if that ever becomes necessary.
Has anyone else considered preparing for hard and difficult times?
May sound creepy but I have this book in my library:
