So my husband and I weren't as careful as we should have been this month and now my period is late. I took a pregnancy test this morning to ease my mind a bit (since we do not want kids yet). I am only 1 day late but the test came back negative within like 30 seconds. With results showing that quickly, does that mean that there's less of a chance that this is a false negative than if it'd taken the full 2 minutes or whatever to indicate the negative reading? I've never taken a pregnancy test before and since you ladies have probably taken your fair share due to TTC I thought you might know this answer. Thanks!

this early, it could be a false positive, but as long as you've missed your period, it should be pretty accurate. wait about a week (and trust me, i KNOW that seems like fifty years when you're waiting to find out if you're pregnant, but it's best) and if you still haven't gotten your period, take another one. if the results are the same, i would trust them.

In my experience with taking pregnancy tests, the control line always showed up very quickly, within seconds, but the second line would take a little bit to show up. Look in the instructions that come with the test and see what the maximum time is for the test to be valid and wait that full amount of time before reading it. It may be best to wait another couple of days and retest if your period has not shown up. Good luck! :)

Thanks for the responses. I did accidently say "false positive" in my post but I meant "false negative" which I have now changed to reflect the correct thing.

I did get a negative and am hoping that this is accurate and am just now anxiously waiting on my period. If it's still not here early next week I will be testing again.

Two of my children were "negatives". Two weeks later the positive result showed up. It's not uncommon for periods to be late, especially only a day. I have been sloppy with the pill on numerous occasions and not gotten pregnant. It all depends on when you ovulate. If you ovulated in the middle of the month and test at the end of the month, it may be negative. Two weeks later you may find it to be positive. I found that 2 weeks pregnant isn't enough time for the result to be positive. Try again in a week or two.
