I'm going to break the rules a little bit and combine some of the items into one. To me, several are so intertwined that it doesn't make sense to speak of one without the other.
- Reading the Bible/Listening to God/Heart for God - This is where it all starts... Without the Word, we don't know how to love, what to have faith in, who or how to worship, who to pray to, what to do at church, or what the commandments/rules of the Bible are. What is wisdom and knowledge without the Word? Isn't that the world's wisdom and not God's wisdom? However, we must read the Word with open ears and Listen to what God is telling us. We have to read with a Heart for God - we cannot simply read it as a story book. We must read the Word as the Living Word of God that is relevant to readers of every time and place.
- Prayer/Listening to God/Heart for God - Prayer is our form of communication with God. We must pray to seek His forgiveness and ask for His saving Grace. But again, we must pray with an open heart and we must also be silent in prayer and listen for God.
- Love - We cannot know the love God intends us to show others until we know Him and experience His love for us. This is the reason I have not ranked Love as #1. Paul does say, "and the greatest of these is Love," but that is assuming that one knows God's love and how to express love as God intends. Without God, love can be corrupted into lust and love can be misplaced. The first commandment and the golden rule both command us to love.
- Faith - We must have faith and trust in God and His Truth. Without the firm foundation of faith in God, we cannot be effective Christians in loving our community and witnessing and bring other so to Christ. We need faith to get out of our comfort zone and do God's work and live according to His will rather than our own.
- Worship - Once we know who God is, experience His Love, and confess our Faith in Him, we must express our thanks to Him through worship. We need to ensure we glorify God and give him credit and show others He is the source of our strength, joy, and peace.
- Friendships - I take this to mean building relationships with others, whether Christians or other. Our relationships with Christians foster growth in faith and provide a support group to help others and to get help when we need it. We must also build relationships and friendships with people who are not Christians so that we may be effective witnesses to them.
- Attending Church - "Where two or more are gathered..." We need to regularly come together as a fellowship of believers to worship God, learn about God and His will, and provide a network of support amongst believers. Christian fellowship builds us up and recharges us to face a fallen world.
- Hospitality - When we are gathered as a community of believers, we must provide a hospitable environment that accepts, loves, and engages non-believers. We don't want to push seekers away by being cold, uncaring, or indifferent to their presence.
- Following Commandments - I rank this here because we shouldn't follow the commandments/rules of the Bible for the sake of adhering to the Law. Christ did not come to abolish the Law, so it is still important that we follow the Law, but He DID come to remind us to focus on love, giving, hospitality, faith, and thing above. In doing these things and by loving the Lord, we will inherently conform to God's Law. But we shouldn't allow our focus on following the rules get in the way of loving others as the Pharisees did.
- Wisdom/Knowledge - I ranked these last for much the same reason as Following the Commandments. I don't think wisdom and knowledge should be our goals - loving others and spreading the Good News should be our goals. Wisdom and Knowledge are valuable tools we pick up by studying the Word, but they can do little to further the Kingdom without the attributes above. For these tools to be most effective, the above must be present.
Teachable Spirit - I left this one out of the list because I'm not 100% what it means. I don't see how it is different from having an Heart for God and Listening to God? Or does it have to do more with humility? From my list, you can see I place Heart for God and Listening to God very high on the list. If it is more to do with Humility, I would probably rank it in the 3-5 range...
