  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I'm going to break the rules a little bit and combine some of the items into one. To me, several are so intertwined that it doesn't make sense to speak of one without the other.

1 - Reading the Bible/Listening to God/Heart for God - This is where it all starts... Without the Word, we don't know how to love, what to have faith in, who or how to worship, who to pray to, what to do at church, or what the commandments/rules of the Bible are. What is wisdom and knowledge without the Word? Isn't that the world's wisdom and not God's wisdom? However, we must read the Word with open ears and Listen to what God is telling us. We have to read with a Heart for God - we cannot simply read it as a story book. We must read the Word as the Living Word of God that is relevant to readers of every time and place.
2 - Prayer/Listening to God/Heart for God - Prayer is our form of communication with God. We must pray to seek His forgiveness and ask for His saving Grace. But again, we must pray with an open heart and we must also be silent in prayer and listen for God.
3 - Love - We cannot know the love God intends us to show others until we know Him and experience His love for us. This is the reason I have not ranked Love as #1. Paul does say, "and the greatest of these is Love," but that is assuming that one knows God's love and how to express love as God intends. Without God, love can be corrupted into lust and love can be misplaced. The first commandment and the golden rule both command us to love.
4 - Faith - We must have faith and trust in God and His Truth. Without the firm foundation of faith in God, we cannot be effective Christians in loving our community and witnessing and bring other so to Christ. We need faith to get out of our comfort zone and do God's work and live according to His will rather than our own.
5 - Worship - Once we know who God is, experience His Love, and confess our Faith in Him, we must express our thanks to Him through worship. We need to ensure we glorify God and give him credit and show others He is the source of our strength, joy, and peace.
6 - Friendships - I take this to mean building relationships with others, whether Christians or other. Our relationships with Christians foster growth in faith and provide a support group to help others and to get help when we need it. We must also build relationships and friendships with people who are not Christians so that we may be effective witnesses to them.
7 - Attending Church - "Where two or more are gathered..." We need to regularly come together as a fellowship of believers to worship God, learn about God and His will, and provide a network of support amongst believers. Christian fellowship builds us up and recharges us to face a fallen world.
8 - Hospitality - When we are gathered as a community of believers, we must provide a hospitable environment that accepts, loves, and engages non-believers. We don't want to push seekers away by being cold, uncaring, or indifferent to their presence.
9 - Following Commandments - I rank this here because we shouldn't follow the commandments/rules of the Bible for the sake of adhering to the Law. Christ did not come to abolish the Law, so it is still important that we follow the Law, but He DID come to remind us to focus on love, giving, hospitality, faith, and thing above. In doing these things and by loving the Lord, we will inherently conform to God's Law. But we shouldn't allow our focus on following the rules get in the way of loving others as the Pharisees did.
10 - Wisdom/Knowledge - I ranked these last for much the same reason as Following the Commandments. I don't think wisdom and knowledge should be our goals - loving others and spreading the Good News should be our goals. Wisdom and Knowledge are valuable tools we pick up by studying the Word, but they can do little to further the Kingdom without the attributes above. For these tools to be most effective, the above must be present.

Teachable Spirit - I left this one out of the list because I'm not 100% what it means. I don't see how it is different from having an Heart for God and Listening to God? Or does it have to do more with humility? From my list, you can see I place Heart for God and Listening to God very high on the list. If it is more to do with Humility, I would probably rank it in the 3-5 range...

It's past .
12) Teachable Spirit (confuses me a bit...)
.

Ok my definition of A teachable spirit is someone who can be taught and is willing to be taught. It ties in with listening to God and a heart for God. The difference is that a heart for God is a willingness to be closer to God, listening to God is the action that results from having a heart from God and a teachable spirit is the act of allowing others to teach you about God and a willingness to exccept and way up other peoples opinions about him.

The bible says " My son , hear the instruction of thy father , and forsake not the law of thy mother; For they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head , and chains about thy neck". Prov 1:8

I think a teachable spirit is important because if we are teachable then we put ourselves in a position to learn all things. Listening to God is also important but its pretty hard to do if you dont already have a teachable spirit. Just my opinion

13) Following Commandments/rules in the Bible (if we did this, every adulterer would be stoned to death which would be at least half the world's population)
14) Reading the Bible

LOL I couldnt say it better. However thier is a case for following the commandments in the Bible being high on the list.

Josh 1:8 says "this book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therin day and night , that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein; for then thou shalt make thy way properous and then thou shalt have good success."

so Following commandments are important , but i think we really need to do it with wisdom and understanding , knowing what is relevent to us and how to follow them today.

Repentance.

Mary

Hey mary thats quite a good point i forgot to add that one!

although I guess repentance is involved with Love
" If ye love lo ve me, keep my commandments" john 14:15

"He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me" John 14:21

"And hereby we do know that we know him if we keep his commandments" 1 john 2:3

So I think that if we repent that is really an act of Love towards God so i think its kinda been covered in a round about way. If you Love God you will repent...

Hey Little lamb and Catholic christian.

I think That God is obviously the most important thing. although I thought heart for God kinda covered it for this list (This list is focusing on most important actions as opposed to most important things ... sorry if that wasnt clarified earlier)

Hmm... Let's see:

Faith : This seems obvious. Without Faith, the rest can't follow.

Prayer : That's our communication with God, so it's pretty crazy important. :)

Following commandments/ rules in the bible
Listening to God: I'm putting these together. I think that listening to God will lead one to follow the commandments, and vice versa.

Reading the bible
Teachable spirit : Again I'm putting two together. Reading the Bible without a Teachable Spirit wouldn't reallywork. Having a teachable spirit, but nothing to teach it with wouldn't work, either.

Attending Church
Friendships : Attending church develops relationships. It also helps with understanding the Bible.

Heart for God
Worship: These seem synonymous to me. I think all of the above help develop this.

Love: Likewise, the above help develop this.

Knowledge
Wisdom: I recognize knowledge and wisdom are two different things, but I think they're equally important and dependent on one another. I think a lot of the above will help develop these.

Hospitality: Honestly, I think this would be covered with following the commandments. Developing it, though, requires all of the above.

So I think Catholic christian was making the point that God should be on the list
