  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Dagnabbit, I keep looking for jobs, and I have a part-time position right now, but I really want a career in Teen Ministry in a city with a Byzantine Catholic church & some semblance of a friendly social scene. I have rejected & been rejected by a number of positions, and some have just left me hanging. 2 positions didn't accept me, because the position itself was cancelled before anyone was hired. Those were the most discouraging, because there was nothing I could do about it.

I am a recent college graduate, and my generation has gone through years of high school & middle school telling us that we need to go to college, get a degree, and then we'll have a great job with great pay. A college degree was made out to be the grand solution for everything we wanted in life, but that just doesn't happen.

So I ask for prayers for myself & my friends in the same situation. Software, IT, accounting, theology, the field doesn't matter; we're all trying to find work in the field we want, whilst settling for work in food service & janitorial work. This is the hidden blessing I keep overlooking, how much these other fields expose us to different kinds of people & build our faith through perseverance. But it's hard to remember that we're blessed when we're poor in spirit, and I ask for prayers on all of us to be led to fulfilling work in good communities, and that we may be more grateful for what we already have.

Thank you all, and I will certainly pray for you, too.

May God lead you to where He wants you to be. A lot of people have extolled the virtues/advantages of higher education. My Dad said those who didn't go to college were losers. :(

Just want to let you all know that the interview went well! This seems like a very good fit for me, and there's even reasonably priced apartments with good location in the area, which was surprising, considering the reputation of Chicago's north suburbs of being so expensive. In a magnificent show of integrity, the people at the parish who will hopefully employ me are really good about working with me & what I'll need. When I find out the price for an apartment, car, and general expenses, they're willing to adjust my salary to meet what I need! I've never even heard of an employer doin that, and it speaks very highly of this parish as a good place to work.

As things have turned, I have been blessed with a great weekend & in-depth interview with the aforementioned Youth Ministry position. The people were amazing, but the position just wasn't a good fit. Seeing so in-depth about the job was certainly beneficial for discerning this step, but I just can't see myself doing it.

I wrote a letter, on a thank-you note, explaining that I was grateful for their hospitality, but I'm not doing anyone any favors if I wait to see if they hire me before rejecting the position. The letter just went out in the mail this morning, and I pray something good may come of it. Writing it out felt like the most dignified way to turn down a job that wouldn't fit, and it's with a heavy heart that I turn away from the people who treated me so well..:sigh:

But Christians understand that the end of something is never the end of everything. If Jesus can die, so can this step of the job search; if He can rise to be even greater, so can this step of the job search. I was directed to a college Campus Ministry position in Indianapolis, something I'm more qualified for, in a city that's not too far, though a beloved family friend was killed there when I was little, so I have a mental block against Indy to get over before I can apply. But this position would put me near the Byzantine Catholic church (very important), and it seems to be a good area overall, with a job that would fit me much better.

Armed with far more practice than I would like, I just made a custom resume for this position, and I'm about to start on the cover letter...I am cynical, but hopeful, and I sincerely pray to God that this can be the last step to giving me permanence somewhere, with a good community, a good church, and all the blessings God may see fit to give.:crossrc:
