I suspect that this is the practice in the Russian tradition as we certainly don't do that in Greece. Over here there is no one holding the cloth up to your chin so you have to hold it yourself, makes it kind of hard to cross your arms :)

You should have seen poor Oblio when he was here :D. There he was assuming the position you just described and there was our priest waiting for him to hold the cloth under his chin before he could give him communion, neither of them expecting what the other was (or wasn't) doing.

All ended well though :)

John.

:D @Oblio

Yeah, that is true about the cloth not being held for you. I think I would prefer it Russian style, though.:)

It all depends on what the Priest decides.

Here in Los Angeles, we have an abundance of altar boys who diligently hold the red communion cloth under the chin of every communicant with two altar boys serving each priest and deacon who distributes Holy Communion. This is true for the ROCOR, the OCA, the Antiochian Orthodox and the Greek Orthodox Church here. Only when the priest is short an altar boy or subdeacons do the laity touch the communion cloth and place it under their own chins.

Do any of you have similar practices?

Well for me, I have only seen Priests handle the cloth, and then the person who is receiving Holy Communion will then hold the cloth while he/she is receiving Communion. However, there is always another Priest near by if the person for some reason needs help.

Well, Oblio, you are in good company, because I did the same thing at the Greek church downtown when I went there instead of my usual parish. The bad thing is that I know the priest there really well and he was wondering who on earth had taught me how to take communion. :o :)

But I have an excuse--I'd been baptized a grand total of 11 weeks beforehand. I took communion twice within the week after that, then I had to go on a seven week hiatus from church ( ). After that I'd taken communion two Sundays, and then this Sunday taking communion in the Greek church. So, I was sort of out of practice on our regular church's communion method, and had no idea how other churches did it. So you can understand why I felt a little strange!

The reason I've read on why we cross our arms is so we don't accidentally make the sign of the cross anywhere near the communion chalice. (Although in my home church, we have enough altar boys to make it a comfortable distance between the chalice and the communicant--I have to lean so far, I feel like I'm going to fall over when I reverence the chalice.)

Today I was Baptized, and it went great! The Priest who I met for the first time today, is a Professor of language, Theology, and Byzantine History. He said he would be happy to teach me anything I would look like to know, anytime. The whole ceremony went very well. At the end of my Baptismal I received Holy Communion from him. So it was a very full experience. Anyway, thanks for all your guys Prayers, and for the Prayers of the Holy Saints, and Praise to God for allowing everything to go so well.

Does anybody know if their is some sort of special case I'm supposed to keep the hair that was cut off during Baptismal in?

That's a good question -- as the hair was blessed!

Ask your nouna!

Welcome HOME, Andreas!

I didn't get to keep mine.

It might be nice to just keep it in your prayer corner. That's where I keep my baptismal candle.
I would keep it in the my Prayer corner, but at this point in my life knowing it's my hair kind of makes me nervous.

After my hair was cut, Fr. C., put it in the baptismal waters. After the baptism, the water was poured onto an unused part of the church lawn.

If having it freaks you out, you could bury it or burn it. Or just start a little box like I have, of things I cannot throw away...like our baptismal candles, sheets, towels, among other things...and pack it away.

Thanks, you leave me with three good options. I'll take a few months to think about it.:)
