  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

lol yeah it seems it.

It is not fun. When its something to do with your heart its so frightening. I am under strict instructions to relax. Its not really possible because I am scared.
Yep, I hear ya. Plus you've got adrenaline coursing through your body too (that's what beta blockers try to "block" actually). So that will naturally make you feel more on edge no matter what. We just have to remember that God knows exactly what is going on and why. He is in control, and it's good to know that, 'cause we sure aren't!

Just out of curiosity, do you have problems with the freezing at the dentist? Does it make your heart race?

Hey guys.

Just to update.... I still feel awful and have been signed off work for the rest of the week. Its really not good because we are so busy. I am not allowed to do anything. Cutting my medication has made my heartbeat speed up so if things dont sort themselves out I will have to go to the specialist. Last time it was 2 nights in hospital which I really dont want because I am terrified of hospitals.

 fuzzymel

I'm so sorry you're having to go through this. It must be really scary. I know how terrified I get when I have to go to the doctor. It makes even suspecting something might be wrong with me just that much worse because the fear of the doctor and hospital kicks in.

Praying that you feel better soon.

I have my doctors appointment tomorrow. My heart is still racing along and it makes me nervous (which is probably making things worse). I just really dont want to be put in hospital again. I dont mind being a day patient but overnight was one of the worst things I have gone through.

My dizzyness is not as bad so dropping down on my medication has helped that but it has made a noticeable difference to my heart rate. Its so annoying because one thing gets better as another gets worse. I am sick of being in the house all day. I really want to get back to work but they wont let me till Monday at the earliest.

Ok big panic and it wasnt as bad as I thought. I am allowed to go back to work on Monday. No specialist appointments at the moment. If my heart doesnt slow down in the future I will have to go back but at the moment the doctor thinks its adjusting to my medication.

Thanks so much for your prayers.

I don't know how I missed all these new requests but I will be praying! (I know how scary heart things can be. I get an irregular heart beat and heart palpitations but I can control them through my diet. I've been "bad" lately and have been having the scary palpitations. It's my own fault though.)

Prayers for you all!

But, the university wants him to sign a contract today to teach two courses in the fall and one course starting next January. He would be paid by the course. It's great that they want him to teach the two courses in the fall, and since he'll be getting paid for research anyway until November, the pay for the courses will supplement his income. However, it's a serious concern that they only have one course for him to teach after that. One course does not pay enough to live on, and he'll no longer be getting paid for doing research. The problem is, the university has packaged these three courses (the two in the fall and the one starting in January) into one contract that they want him to sign today. If he signs it, we'll be living in complete poverty next winter, unless something else miraculously turns up before then that he can do here at this university.

Good news concerning the situation I wrote about above! The university has come up with two more courses they want my husband to teach in January. So we won't be living in poverty this winter! Yay!! Praise God!

Still no word on anything more permanent. But we're good until April 2008, at least.

Thanks for the prayers!

Excellent! :) He's an adjunct?

No, not exactly. He's a postdoctoral fellow (doing research for a professor), and also does sessional teaching. The university can't afford to fund another proper position, so they just pay him by the course. So he ends up earning a lot less than what a professor would, even though he's doing pretty much the same job and has the same qualifications.

From what we've read, this seems to be the trend in academia (here in Canada, at least), because universities just don't have the kind of funding that they used to. The situation is so bad that my husband and others in his situation just have to take what they can get and be thankful for it.

My husband got his PhD in 2003, so he's more than ready for something more permanent, but there's just nothing out there. When there are permanent positions available, the competition for them is huge.

If nothing turns up within the next couple of years, we might have to consider leaving Canada for the sake of my husband's career. But I don't want to do that! :sigh:

It's exactly the same in the Netherlands, so I'm afraid it's pretty much worldwide.:( And the weird thing is, it doesn't even make sense (to me) that the academic world is in such a difficult financial position.
My husband got his PhD in 1999, and a permanent research position is not possible; we're very grateful for the permanent teaching position but that's only a 0.3 job, so he has a second job at a school to make a fulltime salary.
