  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I was officially offered the job I had asked you guys to pray about a while ago! Even better is that the pay is higher than I would have ever expected as I am coming in as a trainee. Still I'll be making over $6/hr than I'm currently making. This will help out so much as my husband's hours still haven't been increased. God is so good!

PS. Please pray as I get ready to leave my current job. I've been here so long that it's tough on everyone.

..The notice period of a job is always hard. I have never seen the point in it. At least there is now light at the end of the tunnel.

This meant a lot to me. Just to have someone understand and put into words what I'm feeling helped so much. Thanks fuzzymel!!!

Epoh I am so happy for you!
Thanks Snooch. You're always so sweet.

...

Thank you so much Orchard. I'm still praying about your husband's job, too!

All of you are the best!

Speaking of jobs... my husband is flying across the country in a couple of weeks for a job interview. He'll be interviewing with 7 people over the course of 6 hours, so I think they want to make sure everyone talks to him who needs to so they aren't flying him out more than once. I knew it was coming, and nothing is definite at all... but I'm freaking out about it. I thought I'd made my peace with the prospect of moving, but now that things are progressing, I'm wigging. :(

So, are you saying you hope he doesn't get this job? How should I pray? Just for peace about it, however it turns out?

Sorry, I guess I should have mentioned the actual prayer request, huh?

No, if he wants the job, I want him to have it, and I'll follow him anywhere. I think the prayers I need most are for peace for me, trust in God's plans for both of us, and enough time and organization for us to make it all happen in short order if that's what it comes to.

Thanks, Orchard

Hubby leaves tomorrow afternoon for his job interview in California. I'm not freaking out like I was, so all the prayers for peace have been helping. Thanks, guys!

If I could ask for more prayers, though, I know my anxiety always flares up when he's away because I get so worried that something will happen to him while he's gone.

So, if you don't mind, I'd really appreciate more prayers for my anxiety, and for his safe travel, and for a successful job interview, and for discernment of whether making the move is God's will for us.

Whew, that's a lot of prayers... :sorry:

I'll pray for all of that, snoochface!:prayer: I always worry a lot too when my husband is away (even if it's only for a day, or half a day).

I have a prayer request too.

Minneke, the 10-year-old calico kitty in my avatar who lives with my parents, has to go to the vet tomorrow. She has been eating badly the last few weeks, my parents at first thought it was stress-related because the neighbours' large dog (a newfoundlander) came in her garden every day (fence was missing - they placed a new one now), and Minneke is terrified of dogs and is a very stressed cat. But now that the fence is there and she's still not eating properly, they have to have her checked, and this not eating may be related to some mouth problems she had in the past (repeatedly) - so the vet was really concerned when my parents called, and Minneke has to be checked completely, under full anaesthetics.

I hope there won't be any bad news. The thing that she had with her mouth a couple of times now will be fatal if it returns. So I hope it's not that.:crossrc: If anything is wrong with her teeth, that can be really bad in her case too. She's already on a special diet, and if she can't eat that anymore... well, I hope it's something else.

So Minneke could use all your prayers tomorrow, or now - I think most of you will still be asleep when she goes to the vet.

Thanks guys!

I haven't been on in awhile because I've just been too overwhelmed mentally and emotionally. Please pray for my new job I just started. I need all the prayer I can get!!!

Snooch, will definitely pray for your anxiety. The same thing happens to me when my hubby goes on his camping trips every year so I completely understand.

RebekkaH, praying for poor little Minneke. It's always so hard when something is wrong with one of our pets because they can't tell us what exactly is going on. :(

My husband's job situation is a real mess right now.

His contract with the professor he's doing research for ends in November, however, his boss has implied that he could be let out of the contract early if he finds a permanent position somewhere that starts earlier than that. But my husband hasn't gotten any of the jobs he's applied for. (And these kinds of jobs are usually arranged well in advance.)

But, the university wants him to sign a contract today to teach two courses in the fall and one course starting next January. He would be paid by the course. It's great that they want him to teach the two courses in the fall, and since he'll be getting paid for research anyway until November, the pay for the courses will supplement his income. However, it's a serious concern that they only have one course for him to teach after that. One course does not pay enough to live on, and he'll no longer be getting paid for doing research. The problem is, the university has packaged these three courses (the two in the fall and the one starting in January) into one contract that they want him to sign today. If he signs it, we'll be living in complete poverty next winter, unless something else miraculously turns up before then that he can do here at this university. Although his boss for the research he's doing will be flexible about letting him out of that contract if necessary, I don't think the boss for the teaching jobs would be that flexible.

Also, it's unlikely that he'd get another research job, because he's doing research as a postdoctoral fellow, and they don't give postdoctoral fellowships to people who have already had their PhD for more than a few years. My husband got his in 2003, so he's already kind of pushing it.

I'm sorry if this all sounds confusing.

Also, we are feeling really discouraged right now, because we just read an article in MacLean's magazine that says that due to a lack of government funding for universities, the trend now is for universities to not hire people for permanent faculty positions. They try to only hire people for sessional teaching, and pay by the course. The article gave an example of a 50 year old man with a PhD who's been the recipient of "Excellence in Teaching" awards, but who nonetheless is only being paid by the course and makes only $26000 a year and has no benefits or pension. If a guy like that (two decades older than my husband and the recipient of awards) can't get a permanent position, what hope does my husband have?

My husband doesn't know what he's going to do. He always wanted a career in academia, but the jobs just aren't out there. He has the option of going into industry, but because he loves the academic atmosphere so much, I think he'd be really depressed if he had to do that. Also, because he's never planned to go in that direction, career-wise, I don't think he even knows where to begin looking for a job in industry.

Sorry this is so long.

Thanks for the prayers guys! They sure helped! Minneke is already home with my parents, she's slowly waking up. Thank goodness the thing we feared (I don't know what it's called, but a bad thing with her mouth) hadn't happened yet - it might have if they had waited longer. She had some infections in her mouth, and some other things that they treated, and she has to go on another special diet, but it really looks alright. I'm so relieved!!!!

Orchard, I'm praying for your husband's job - I really hope he can get another research contract in spite of the bad climate. Miracles happen all the time, and I'm praying for one for you now! :prayer:

I know exactly what you mean, my husband had this last year. It's apparently bad in academia worldwide. Money is tight, they are letting people off everywhere (yes, often excellent teachers!). My husband was a postdoctoral fellow too until last summer, and you're right, they don't want to keep the older ones - giving someone another contract that is very very rare, even if you're excellent. The nasty thing is that they see two different things as one contract - my husband has had problems with that too. (He had one contract for half teaching and half research at university - but the one half ended in August 2006).

The miracle that happened in our case was that his other job (the academic job wasn't large enough to live off, only 0.6 of a fulltime job) at the dutch equivalent of high school could be expanded enough to (exactly!) compensate for the loss of the research job, and at the right time (August). So it worked perfectly for us, and I'm praying for another miracle in your husband's case.
