Long time, no see OpenDoor. I hope you are doing well. I've kinda quit going there because I was tired of the arguing, and it was unsettling to my soul. I will try to take a quick look at it. Maybe some of my brothers and sisters here will post on that thread.

I used to post almost exclusively in GT; I just don't think I can do it anymore.

There's an immediate suspicion of Orthodoxy among some members there - to the extent that comments are met with a perfunctory dismissal -- that EO are not quite being straight on beliefs, a refusal to consider that there might be another worldview, that ancient Christianity might be authentic and different from what western modern Christianity has become.

There is little patience for critical analysis - when someone thinks they've found a weak spot, often through the misreading of a text or by the use of a text wrested out of context and distorted, this fallacy tends to be repeated ad nauseum (over years). There seems to be a great love of slap-down strategy, just narrowly skirting the rules, over substance.

It's not worth it. Not only does it present a spiritual struggle to be there, imo it is not spiritually fruitful for some non-EO posters to have sitting (EO) ducks to shoot at.

Imo, GT is not about dialogue, not about opportunity to 'understand' the other.
And in my experience, I do not respect what it seems to actually "be about".

Thank you Dorothea and Matt.

I am sad to hear that most of you no longer post in GT.
To bad a little Orthodoxy can do a lot of good

sometimes :p
:D They can come here if they have an interest in Orthodoxy. ;)

I agree. I read threads sometimes on there, but I very rarely post. I believe that I know at least a couple of the people that you are talking about, and I have to admit that I have put these people on ignore. I have gotten to where I dread seeing the posts on the Theotokos because as an ex-Baptist, I pretty much know what the reaction is going to be on the part of most Evangelicals (and notice I said "most", not all). I used to think the same way myself. Therefore, I will not start threads on the Theotokos. Why expose her to the comments that I know will be made? A person's heart has to be open to truth, and most hearts are not open on that board. Why even expose the Theotokos and the saints to what we know is going to be the reaction? Also, we are opening these people to saying things that they may have to answer for, especially regarding Christ's mother, the Theotokos. If we know what the reaction is probably going to be, we should just leave the subject alone. Elders only speak when they know that the person is ready to hear what they are going to say. If the person isn't ready to hear, the elder doesn't speak the words. Maybe we need to do the same.

Wait, since when is any thread there potentially great? ;)

I'm kidding, but I only read that forum just to get a kick out of the silliness and I rarely ever post. Most people there are too hard-headed to even consider the Orthodox point of view.

General Theology forum. You will never find a more wretched hive of vitriol and heresy. We must be cautious.

when I feel like posting there, I have a bad feeling about this.
