I want to suggest the possibility that prophecy is being fulfilled before our very eyes. I say possibly because my lack of knowledge of Jewish culture and how they traditionally conduct war. What I have noticed, though, is that Jesus made a very specific prophecy about Jerusalem’s desolation and when that desolation would be lifted.
““Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing. Look, your house is left to you desolate. For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’””
- Matthew 23:37-39 NIV
Some may recognize that last passage from Psalm 118:26.
“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. From the house of the Lord we bless you.”
- Psalms 118:26 NIV
What is fascinating is that the entire Psalm talks about how God gave Israel military success against those surrounding him after having endured his chastisement for his waywardness. Just before verse 26, the Psalmist says concerning their fight with the surrounding nations, “LORD save us! LORD grant us success!”
This passage was prayed by the armies of Israel on October 28, 2023 as they prayed around one of their tanks before they launched their ground invasion of Gaza.
If you read Joel 3, Zephaniah 3, Zechariah 12, Ezekiel 37, and many more Old Testament prophecies, the pattern of prophecy follows as such: 1) Israel chastised by God, 2) Israel restored by God to their land and city, 3) God fights alongside Judah and Jerusalem against the nations surrounding them, 4) their Messiah comes and established a reign of righteousness.
I believe we have been and are seeing the third step in that prophetic pattern taking place before our eyes and, very soon, the Jews will say, “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.” Then, and only then, I believe, the temple will be built.
