Christian doctrine needs to make sense viewed through the lens of science and history. Even the pope agrees. Pretending marriage is somehow different and "God invented" to any other human institution is silly. And tiresome. And what's worse, it makes non-believers tune out and ignore you. Millstones around the neck, and all that. So stop it.
