This is correct. Hell is separation from God, not fire and brimstone. God does not torture people.
My husband grew up in a First Baptist Church and there was a lot of fire and brimstone preaching there. I’m glad I never experienced that type of preaching.

Like the Pope, just a thought:

Most people cannot properly explain (nor do they have a proper comprehesion of) infinity, let alone have a proper explain of (or a comprehesion of) infinite justice tempered with infinite mercy.

I know I don't.

Oh but it is torture ...

God is absolute everything beautiful and wonderful, full separation from the Source of Love and all things wonderful is an absence and in that absence is pain of the highest degree.

The torture is not being near the Lord.
The Lord does not wish this, the person while living refused to love the Lord or believe or want Him.
They, not by desire of the Lord, cannot withstand His Presence.

But the lake of fire, is indeed true.

Looks like it's not tempered with mercy on judgment day.

There will be no mercy for those who have not shown mercy to others. But if you have been merciful, God will be merciful when he judges you. James 2:13

I forget where I got this but infinity is not a measure of time.
It just is.

The soul is just - present, without measuring time.
On earth because of time we fear the end and maybe fear it lasting.

But without time, and no reason to measure it, you are just 'present' at all times.
In the moment... without record.

The only importance is where your lot on earth, ends.

A pope who is still alive but has lost his evangelical wits. I'm hoping he had them at one time.
In a senate debate in Argentina in 2010 he supported civil unions for gay couples. Evangelical wits?

Eternal separation from God ... what a terrible fate. The mere thought of it is horrifying.
From what I have heard via my daughter who was checking out people who had been satanic and when they are attacked by evil, they literally are numb and indifferent to it.
So... that's awful.
