Bruni later told journalists that Benedict XVI received the sacrament of the anointing of the sick on Dec. 28, in the presence of the consecrated women who helped run his household.

The Vatican announced Saturday that the funeral Mass of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI will take place on Thursday, Jan. 5, 2023, in St. Peter’s Square.

Pope Francis will preside over the funeral, which, in keeping with Benedict’s wishes, “will be carried out under the sign of simplicity,” Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said.

I wish they'd do an Extraordinary Form Requiem Mass for him, since he would've loved that. If they're doing it in the square then I doubt they are.

As is traditional, Benedict’s body will be laid in St. Peter’s Basilica on Monday so that the faithful can file by to pay their respects.
I wish I could be there.

You could knock me over with a feather if Pope Francis would preside over an Extraordinary Form Requiem Mass!

It appears Pope Benedict want it simple.

‘Quite soon, I shall find myself before the final judge of my life…’

VATICAN CITY — With the early morning news of the passing of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, the Catholic Church and the world is grieving and remembering a life so well lived.

With a tremendous wealth of spiritual advice and sound theological doctrine, it is no easy task to pluck the best quotations from such a humble and generous soul. But as we mourn the loss of such a great man, here are just 10 quotes from Benedict XVI that we remember especially today.

Quite soon, I shall find myself before the final judge of my life. Even though, as I look back on my long life, I can have great reason for fear and trembling, I am nonetheless of good cheer, for I trust firmly that the Lord is not only the just judge, but also the friend and brother who himself has already suffered for my shortcomings, and is thus also my advocate, my ‘Paraclete.’ In light of the hour of judgment, the grace of being a Christian becomes all the more clear to me. It grants me knowledge, and indeed friendship, with the judge of my life, and thus allows me to pass confidently through the dark door of death. In this regard, I am constantly reminded of what John tells us at the beginning of the Apocalypse: he sees the Son of Man in all his grandeur and falls at his feet as though dead. Yet He, placing his right hand on him, says to him: ‘Do not be afraid! It is I…’ (cf. Rev 1:12-17)

A Christian knows when it is time to speak of God and when it is better to say nothing and to let love alone speak.

Yes, and vaguely good pope John XXIII.
I was in college in 1978 and I remember hearing about the deaths of those two popes on the radio. I carried the news to the Newman Center on campus both times. The second time the priest told me 'That was last month' and I said 'No, it happened again'.

When John Paul II died one of the things they did was make a cast of his hands. A bit odd but hey. That was part of a traveling exhibit of the papacy about ten years ago that took a stop in Milwaukee. My wife had some business there and was already in Milwaukee so my son and I drove to Milwaukee to see the exhibit and to surprise my wife. Anyhow, they had a bronze of his hands. and it was very moving touching that. I had spent my adult life with pope John Paul and his cardinal Ratzinger. That era is now over.

The Diocese of Regensburg, in Germany, has put together a website, benedictusxvi.org, where people can leave their condolences for Benedict XVI.
Good idea.

For here we have no lasting city,
but we seek the one that is to come. (Hebrews 13:14)

The Spirit came upon me and I prayed very fervently for him this morning after I had heard the news. It was a powerful experience. I have read and been enriched by many of his works.

There you go, yep. I can't even imagine what it'd be like to see Pope Francis in EF vestments. Especially the black ones for a requiem Mass. Though, I wouldn't be surprised if Benedict and Francis had very different definitions of simple, ha.

I thought the same. I’ve never heard the term, sign of simplicity...

Have you?

I haven't, I have no idea what that could mean other than that's just a oddly complicated way of saying they're going to have a garden variety Novus Ordo that's in it's typical stripped-down Baptist fashion. Which seems like something that'd be so counter to Benedict's wishes. After all the lengths he went to to rescue the TLM I can't imagine him saying "when I die, please just hold one of those drab protestant services NO's for me. I love me some Marty Haugen."

Yeah it’s curious. I really don’t like the way they communicate to the flock. Or don’t. I just never heard about a sign of simplicity...

I can't remember which bishop or cardinal said it first, but it's been repeated a lot by current Catholic commentators and it's the concept of "weaponized ambiguity".
