The deaths in Pompeii and Herculanium remain a terrible tragedy, even after all these years. The pyrhoclastic flow from volcanos must be one of the most horrible ways to die in a natural disaster. However, the silver lining is that much knowledge about 1st Century Roman life was preserved in their deaths and the ash that covered the cities.

As far as the show goes, I thought it was magnificent. The mix of voice-over and acting really captured the trepidation and choas in those final hours of the doomed cities. If you missed it when it originally aired, Discovery should re-run it and I'm sure the Discovery Channel website will list when.

I've recorded the show, but I haven't had time to watch it. But you're right it is really sad. I remember reading the story when I was a child, and how bad it scared me. Haha most kids are afraid of the boogeyman, but I'm afraid of some odd years old volcano!
