  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Yay, another Muslim in the E&M forum! Welcome!

I voted for the second option. I believe polygamy can be a good thing if there are pragmatic reasons to engage in it, whereas I consider it to be immoral to be polygamous just for fun. I kinda like the Egyptian system where legally marrying an additional wife requires the consent of all the current wives.

Here is the thing... I do not get it, how is it 'freedom to choose' and then suddenlyt he second option is along the lines of 'but all parties should have a say.'

Was there really ever an assumption that people would be married against their will?

I can only understand polygamy through what I know of monogamy, and I have never heard of people in the United States essentially told 'you're marrying me and you can do nothing about it.'

Yes, her father with gun is his hand can say it. :)

I agree that there should be no force. Neither you can't nor you must. You must have the freedom to choose.

I'd be overjoyed if polygamy became legal. But I would want it to be clear that every person in the relationship had to consent. Also I'd want for it to not be restrictive about genders... so you could have either multiple wives or multiple husbands.

Should it be legal? Yes, consenting adults should be able to form whatever partnership arrangements suit them, and the property laws and child custody laws which cover monogamous marriages should also cover polygamous ones.

...Although I cannot personally imagine wanting another husband: one is almost more than I care to deal with sometimes.

I think that has something to do with the other spouse being able to approve of the new marriage.

Isn't it rather odd that while it is perfectly legal to live and sleep with with two or more women (or two men if you are a woman), it only becomes illegal if you marry them both.

Somebody might explain the logic of this, because it eludes me.

And BTW, I agree with DLaurier - one woman is more than enough, especially when the "will there be kids with that?" order comes into play.

I agree that a polygamous union should be a decision by the whole group, but I don't see why pleasure shouldn't be a factor. If a couple meet another person whose company in their lives and their beds would be "fun" and rewarding -- why not? Do they have to have some compelling practical reason for it?

The economic and legal implications of polygamous marriages make it a bit difficult. The relationships should be and are legal, but all sorts of problems come up. Should there be a limit on parties to the marriage? Will employers have to provide the same benefits? What are the implications for immigration?

Well, I was rather talking about the Islamic variant of polygamy, where the man is married to several women separately - they aren't all married to each other in one big marital union, or anything like that. Which means that, at the end of the day, the wives will have to share a husband, which is bound to cause all sorts of problems. Which is why it shouldn't be engaged in lightly.
