• CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Why is it, in some countries, it is illegal to practice polygamy, but legal to do infidelity, that is cheating on your spouse?

Why is it men are punished when they are made to be more responsible (polygamy)?

While they are not punished when they broke the sanctity of their marriage to their lawfully married wives and being irresponsible (infidelity)?

Is this some kind of male conspiracy?

They can cheat (according to the law, it's legal) but force themselves not to be burdened by more responsiblities (by making polygamy illegal).

Different countries, different laws. For that matter, different regions within a country, different laws. :sorry:

Sorry I really don't have a clear answer to your given questions, but I can say that I don't necessarily look to man's (various and sometimes contradictory) laws to determine if something pleases God.

Judging by some of the "logic" employed in this board, every day, I see no reason why liberal Christians should oppose polygamy. Or bestiality, for that matter. After all, if the verses prohibiting homosexuality are suddenly meaningless, then so are the verses prohibiting other abominable sexual sins.

Probably a form of a double standard and people's perception. It happens frequently in politics in the US all the time.

By logic, I imagine not following people pretending to have all of the answers or a religion that is based on faith? The only illogic I see, is in your post. How does one not wishing to ban two consenting adults from being married lead to infidelity or beastiality? Are not the majority of marriages that end in divorce or infidelity Christian? How about the cases of Chritian spiritual leaders getting nailed every so often for child pornagraphy?

The difference is animals are unwilling. If you were to try to equate it to a human-human act it would be closer to rape than homosexuality.

This is a digression though, and I don't know why the laws are like that, though it does vary based on where you are.

1. Polygamy raises too many tax and property disputes.
2. Most if not all societies have been monogamous for millenia and the idea of allowing polygamy is not one which is ingrained in our cultures, same reason why people oppose gay marriage - its new, its sudden, and it hasnt been practiced for millenia like hetero marriage between couples.
3. Most nations are not theocracies.
4. The Pope doesn't control the world anymore. Regardless of what some people think.

Nay on polygamy, but yay for booting the church out of the social contract!

An animal cannot consent (and neither can a child which is the other supposed "logical" step on the ladder of sexual sins that liberals supposedly should agree with if they argue for consenting adults being free from laws governing the actions in their bedrooms)

Personally I could care less about polygamy between consenting, non-coerced ADULTS (14 year old child brides don't count regardless of the age of consent in any given place)

I don't understand why polygamy or polyandry are illegal in the United States. From a Christian perspective, polygamy was certainly practiced in the OT, and not specifically condemned in the NT. The outlawing of polygamy probably relates to the American people's general distaste for its practice by the Mormons in the 1800's; the LDS eventually outlawed it, but there are still thousands of fundamentalist offshoots who practice it in Utah and other neighboring enclaves.

The problems I see with polygamy are the potential legal complications in divorce, jealousy, inheritance. In the HBO show "Big Love", the first wife has a higher status of being the boss who manages the finances and visitation arrangements. Is that the case in Islamic plural marriages?

I wouldn't take Big Love as an accurate depiction of plural marriage, but a former boyfriend of mine was from a polygamous family, his father had 4 wives, (they were a Muslim family in West Africa) the senior wife was the one with the final say on most things among the wives, but it wasn't necessarily carried over with my boyfriend's Dad giving one wife more say than the others, and none of the wives was in charge at all of money.. in fact each pretty much had to earn their own money///and his junior wives had been used as a weapon in his disputes with his first wife or second wife. Unlike the idea in American plural marriages where the whole family supposedly agrees with a new person invited into the family in my friend's family it was him just bringing someone new home... not sure what the actual expectations are in any community where plural marriage is accepted.. but I think we all know the way it's written isn't the way families always live.

Personally I can't imagine navigating such a tedious web of relationships.. but I'm not sure it's all that different than dealing with the serial monogamy of a husband who had 2 previous wives and 3 children before we married ... all these people, all these emotions and hurt feelings and demands on each other OY!

I wonder if many Christian men would welcome polygamy, as it would give them legal ground to have what is supposed to be men's ultimate fantasy - having more than one woman to choose from.

It might be exciting at first, but I imagine it could get complicated and backbreaking later - that is, unless you keep the wimmin in line, with a eunuch, or something. Like what the sultans used to do.
