  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What does evolution tell us about marriage? According to the Bible there was a lot of Polygamy going on back in the ancient days. Now people talk about Monogamy. If you reject what the Church has to say about marriage. Then what does Science tell us about the subject? Should that have a impact on what the court system has to say about it?

Some people believe that there was no marriage back before civilization and that people tended to be more polyamorous. Others point to the monogamy we see in birds and in some of the mammals and claim that this is man's natural state.

We, and science, do not know.
That is why God has to tell us about it specifically.

There are a lot of very strange data on this issue. From DNA studies, the human males do "express themselves" far wider than the scriptures (other than in Genesis, or Kings) might hope.

American author Mark Twain had some wise words on this question.

Taoism accepts polygamy. Why?

We, and science, do not know.
That is why God has to tell us about it specifically.
God said to be fruitful and multiply. So we will need to further qualify just how He wants us to be fruitful and multiply. For example Ezra told the people: "10Then Ezra the priest stood up and said to them, "You have been unfaithful and have married foreign wives adding to the guilt of Israel.11"Now therefore, make confession to the LORD God of your fathers and do His will; and separate yourselves from the peoples of the land and from the foreign wives."…

God did not like it that Israel married foreign brides. Yet science tells us that the more foreign the bride is the more healthy your kids are going to be. So that you do not have any problems with inbreeding. In this case we know that Israel were a choosen people special onto God. So He did not want them to mingle with the non Israel people. Today as Christians we are not to be unequally yoked. A Christian is not to marry someone that is not a Christian. Yet if a person becomes a Christian after they get married then they are to stay in that marriage.

Teachings on Marriage
13And a woman who has an unbelieving husband, and he consents to live with her, she must not send her husband away. 14For the unbelieving husband is sanctified through his wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified through her believing husband; for otherwise your children are unclean, but now they are holy.15Yet if the unbelieving one leaves, let him leave; the brother or the sister is not under bondage in such cases, but God has called us to peace.…

Nothing in the Tao te Ching addressed polygamy per se. Most marriage rules are reflections of what economic conditions existed when they were codified. The Bible is much clearer that polygamy is fine unless you wanted to become a Bishop. Then you should restrict yourself to just one wife.

The result of a very large brain and the structural limits of the human pelvis resulted in an essentially premature birth for modern humans. This means that there is a prolonged infancy, and a greater need for maternal/child support by the male. For obvious evolutionary reasons, this favors monogamy.
