  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I realize this is a conservative Christian site but I would like to take a quick survery with just ONE QUESTION. (I also know there are unbelievers who come to this site and I would like for them to vote also). NO NEED TO COMMENT. JUST YES OR NO. I will start a new thread on the subject when people have had time to answer.

Question: Do you believe that we are all sinners, doomed to hell unless we repent of our sins and receive Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior?

I will leave this up for one week and take a count at the end. One week will be May 6th.

You would have to define "Hell". Fire and Brimstone, consciously tortured for all eternity, Dante invention of Hell? No, it doesn't exist. Destroyed, cease to exist, separated from God Hell, maybe.

What Jesus taught.

Yeah, ok. Alot of people will be surprised on Judgement Day.

Is that supposed to be a threat? It's a common known fact that Dante Alighieri had an enormous influence on the "vision" of Hell, and that his view was adopted and passed on by the Catholic Church. The whole, Lucifer and angelic fall from heaven, the "levels of hell", the fire and brimstone torture scenario is all a work of fiction.

Nothing promotes conversion like the threat of eternal torture. The Catholic Church adopted this view, because fear brought more people into the pews.

Jesus never taught that hell was an eternal torture chamber controlled by fallen angels.

Who said it is controlled by fallen angels? You're watching too much T.V. They're the ones hell was created for. God controls hell and he is the one that casts people there.

As far as eternal torment, the bible disagrees with you. Weeping and gnashing of teeth doesn't sound like a party to me. Here are just a few bible passages on the subject.

Luke 16:23-25

23And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

24And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.

25But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.

Mark 9:43 says, "And if your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life crippled, than having your two hands, to go into hell, into the unquenchable fire." The word "unquenchable" is "asbestos" in the Greek. According to the enhanced Strong's lexicon, it means "unquenchable, the eternal hell fire to punish the damned."

Rev. 14:11: "And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever; and they have no rest day and night, those who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name."

Rev. 20:10-15

10-And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

11And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.

12And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

13And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.

14And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

15And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

So, if you end up in the lake of fire, you shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. Or is that just a metaphor?

Not a threat, a fact (Matt 7). Stop listening to what men say about hell and pick up your bible and see what Jesus Himself says about hell.

He was speaking metaphorically. The common understanding of Hell is based on Dante's Inferno and Milton's Paradise Lost.

Um, no it's not. The common understanding of hell is based on the teachings of Jesus and the bible, not on poems.

I honestly don't know how to answer this poll because I don't really like the way the question is worded and I don't really like a simple yes or no answer. The reason? Because I don't think it is that simple. I think that if a person is invincibly ignorant of Christ's one true Church, the Catholic Church, and it's teachings and it's truth and if they obey their God-given well-formed conscience to the best of their ability, then they may make it to Heaven. Nobody can know for sure if they will make it to Heaven or not but I'd say that such a person has a good chance of making it to Heaven. So, let's say you are a poor Muslim child living in Saudi Arabia where Christianity is illegal. You grow up knowing nothing but Islam and have little, if any education on other religions. One day, you are in a car accident and die. Note that this person has never even heard of Jesus Christ in his life. His family never thought it was important to teach about Jesus whom they believed to be nothing more than a good prophet. You know, one of the many many prophets that there are in Islam. Instead, this Muslim child grew up learning about Muhammad and the Quran and how to pray in Islam and such. This man dies without ever even hearing the name of Jesus Christ. He lives his life as best he can according to the Muslim conscience that he has. He dies and then he goes before the Judgment Seat of Christ. Christ says, "Hello Abdul, my name is Jesus Christ." Abdul says "Who?", Jesus says "I am Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world. Let me tell you a little bit about me since I know you never heard of me. I am the Son of God. I came down from Heaven, inhabited the womb of the immaculate Virgin Mary, was born by her, raised by her, and at about the age of 30, I began my ministry. First I was baptized by a prophet named John the Baptist. Then, I went into the wilderness for 40 days and 40 nights. Finally, I began my public ministry. I wandered the Israeli lands healing people, curing diseases, curing blindness, deafness, and muteness. I even raised the dead! But that is not the most important thing I did. I lived a sinless life and there was no guilt in me but yet the Jews wanted me dead anyway. Well, on the night that I was betrayed, I took bread, looked up to Heaven, gave thanks, and said 'Take eat, this is my body, which will be given up for you.' and then I took the cup, looked up to Heaven, gave thanks, and said 'This is the cup of my blood, the blood of the new and everlasting covenant, it will be shed for you and for all so that sins may be forgiven. Do this in memory of me.' While I was distributing my most sacred Body and Blood to my disciples, I said 'This night one of you will betray me.' Peter, one of my disciples said, 'Surely it is not I, Lord.' and I said 'The one who dips his bread in my cup is the one who will betray me.' Then Judas, another one of my disciples, left and betrayed me for 30 pieces of silver. That night, as I was praying in the Garden of Gethsemene, and in great agony at that knowing what was to come, the soldiers and temple guards finally came. I said 'Who are you looking for?', they said 'Jesus of Nazareth.' 'I am he.' I said. Then, Judas who was at the front of the crowd walked forward and kissed me on my cheek. I said to him, 'Judas, you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?' and then the soldiers took me away. Next, they took me to the Jewish temple where the high priest and other priests interrogated me to try and find me guilty of something. They found me guilty of nothing although they insisted that I was guilty of blasphemy. They also accused me of being guilty of being an insurrectionist to Pilate, who they took me to after they had finished interrogating me. Pilate did not want to punish me at first for fear of starting a riot. However, he eventually gave in to the majority who wanted me punished. He had me brutally flogged and whipped. After this, the soldiers placed a crown of thorns on my head. Then, they took me back to Pilate. Pilate said 'Behold the man!'. Unfortunately, the crowd began to shout 'Crucify him! Crucify him! Crucify him!' In order to placate the crowds, Pilate had me crucified and I began the long, slow, and excruciating journey to the place of the skull, where they were to crucify me. Finally, they crucified me and I died. My agony was over. But this is not the end of the story. Nope." Abdul said, "What happened next?" Jesus said, "Well, I preached to the righteous souls in Hades the Gospel and how I had come to set them free. They, being righteous, accepted this and were immediately taken into Heaven." "Then, after three long days of being in the grave, my Father resurrected me. I had arisen from the dead. I then appeared to all of my disciples and told them 'Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age.' Shortly after that, I ascended back to Heaven to be with my Father where I am now. And that, Abdul, is how I redeemed the world. You, Abdul, were unaware of how I accomplished this but you lived a righteous life in accordance with what I taught you via your conscience. Therefore, you may now enter into the Kingdom of Heaven. Enjoy it! I will wipe every tear from your eye, there will be no more pain or mourning, for behold, I make all things new." And thus, Abdul, the Muslim, who had never heard of Christ, makes it to Heaven. I truly believe that the above scenario could very well happen. So no, we are not all sinners who are doomed to Hell unless we receive Christ. We are doomed to Hell if we know about Christ and reject Him and His Gospel. We are doomed to Hell if we know the truth that the Catholic Church teaches and reject it. However, we are not necessarily doomed to Hell if we never knew of Christ or His Church and therefore never had the opportunity to reject it. As for Abdul, the Muslim man from Saudi Arabia, if he learns the truth that there is only one God through Islam and rejects that truth even though he knows it is true, he will go to Hell unless he repents. The above scenario could just as easily apply to a Buddhist, Hindu, Janist, Animist, Native American who knows only his Native American religion, Jew, or even a Satanist. (Personally, I think that a Satanist has a much more diminished chance of making it to Heaven than does a devout Muslim though.) But anyway, my point is, I can't answer the question in the poll because the question itself is invalid. Sorry, but I refuse to vote in a poll where I believe that the question is not even a valid one.

That said, the above scenario may contain doctrinal errors. I am not a theologian so I may have made some doctrinal errors in it. Hopefully none of them were major if they do exist. If you do spot a doctrinal error in my scenario (a doctrinal error according to Catholicism that is) then please do PM me and let me know. Please don't PM me if you think that I am in doctrinal error because my scenario doesn't fit well with your evangelical Christian doctrine. Remember, I am not an evangelical Christian. ;) Just take a look at the faith icon and you'll have proof of that. ;):p

God bless and sorry I made my post so long,
Ave Maria (aka Holly)

Yes, hell is as real as you can get. It's a Bible FACT, and God's Word is the sole authority on this subject. What unbelievers make fun of and laugh off now has no effect on what reality will be for eternity. There won't be anything funny about it.

Actually, the Magisterium of the Catholic Church is the sole authority on this subject. Nobody has the authority to authoritatively interpret the Bible but the Magisterium as a whole. The Magisterium looks at both Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition and then makes a decision based upon what they see in Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition. Only the Magisterium can make an infallible interpretation on this subject.

Note that I do agree that people who refuse to believe in Christianity after having been taught the truth of Christianity have little chance of making it to Heaven. However, we cannot judge. It is a mortal sin to judge the state of another person's soul or their eternal destination. Who are we to know that the Atheist you see laughing about our beliefs on the forum today isn't going to die tomorrow, then come back after having seen Jesus and believe in God only to die again and then make it to Heaven because of his new belief? We can't know that this won't or can't happen. Why? Because it can happen and it might have actually happened in the past. Nobody knows for sure. My priest told me once that a person often gets a chance to repent of their sins and accept Christ at the very last moment of life. He said this is not doctrine but that it is his own personal belief. I personally choose to believe the same thing. :)

The Bible is not God's Word, Jesus is. To claim otherwise is to commit the sin of bibliolatry (worshipping the Bible).

The Catholic church is not the authority for anything except the Catholics attending it and submitting to it.

The One True Church is the Church Which is the Body of Christ - a church not made with human hands - and Jesus Christ Himself is the Head over it. God is in control of the REAL CHURCH - God is the SOLE AUTHORITY - and the Bible is GOD'S WORD. The teachings and traditions of men are FALSE if they aren't in agreement with God's Word. Men aren't the authority for a single thing.

I, for one, could care less how the so-called Magisterium interprets anything. If you want to be under men instead of God, that's your right and business. As for me, I have a personal relationship with God, and I don't need men. I can go to the Throne of God's Grace in prayer 24/7, and He loves to hear my prayers. The same is true for all members of the One True Church - the Church Which Is The Body of Christ. There are no denominations, tags, and labels in the One True Church - just Born-Again Christians.

Romans 12:5 KJV So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.

Galatians 6:10 KJV As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.

Ephesians 5:18-21 KJV And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; 19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; 20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; 21 Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.

Colossians 3:15-17 KJV And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. 17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.
