  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Pointless posts.

Hey Rose - weren't you wanting my take on The DaVinci Code when I finished the book? I don't remember if it was you or another. I'm finished if you want it.
Well, I'm about to start it- so go ahead.

(I have read Angels and Demons- if that matters)

Yes ma'am! I am looking for your book report to determine whether I should take the time to read it! :D -----R

I have not read Angels & Demons - that's next (yes, I know I'm going backwards). My husband also highly recommends Digital Fortress by the same author. It doesn't have the same main character, but it's another big consipiracy story.

Ok, not goint to give up too much of the story line so I won't get into too many specifics, except for what's been made public:

My so-called educated opinion is that the author took a few facts (i.e. Opus Dei, and the secrecy of that society), a few theories (i.e. the status of Mary Magdeline among the original disciples), and spun quite a tale. The big "shocker" in the underlying story is that Jesus and Mary Magdeline were married and that Mary was pregnant when Jesus was crucified, and that the Catholic Church knew this and is involved in a massive, two millenia long coverup. The "proof" for this "fact" are some verses in some of the Gnostic books that I think were taken out of context, and some "lost in translation" words that Jesus used to designate Mary, as opposed to the other disciples - that the words that He used were words that only a husband would use towards his wife - supposedly. The other shocker is that Mary Magdeline represents the "sacred feminine" that has been a premise in Pagan beliefs even before Judiasm.

I was a little surprised that I could form arguments against the stuff in my head, as I was reading it - I guess I have more knowledge and faith than I give myself credit for. I do believe that Mary played a larger role than what the Bible alludes to. Even though the Bible does not say whether or not they were married, I don't believe they were.

I don't think the book tests your faith, assuming your faith is strong (I say that reluctantly because I'm a huge advocate of seeing Fiction as that - Fiction, meaning not true). It will make you think about your faith, though. The RCC and other Christian sources have been working overtime on disproving the stuff said in this fictional tale - there are no less than 5 books on disproving The DaVinci code at my neighborhood Christian Bookstore. You can't help but wonder at that.

Still, I was able to easily separate the Truth and what the book was saying, and see it for the exciting mystery thriller that it is. There are quite a few twists, and I had wrongly guessed who the bad guy was, which made it even more exciting to me.

I enjoyed reading it, and highly recommend it.

Excellent news! This was the assurance I was looking for. A friend of mine wanted to read it but her pastor recommended against it. However, my friend almost bit off on a cult a couple of years ago and her pastor was aware of this so I imagine that played a role in his recommendation to her.

Thanks much!!! (Now...where do I find the time!:sigh: )-----R

I'm glad you will, I really enjoyed reading it.
I haven't read Digital Fortress- I have read Deception Point, though- and it proves the author can write a good story without involving Religion, the Illuminati, the Vatican, etc..

I need a paperback before I'll read it, though- hardcover books are just too big to drag around...

We have Deception Point at home too. I'm with you, I'd rather a paperback. However, he has a book fetish and will re-read a book over and over, which is why he insists on getting all books in hardcover if at all possible. Some men collect baseball cards, he collects books. It's so bad he's building floor to ceiling bookshelves in our family room.

I love to read, but it comes and goes in phases. He has to have a book with him at all times, no matter where he is.

I'm not complaining - he could have worse habits. He's MY Geek. :D

He sounds like me. I reread books over and over. The only ones I could part with were the Left Behind books. ;)
I just bought another book of Dean Koontz's. (three books in one cover) I flip- flop between Dean and Robin Cook.

Actually, I would hide the answers in Liberated Lutherans.
;)
I'm getting the threads confused.
May the Lord have mercy! Hiding answers (Assume by editing) in a 4,000 post thread!

Just PM the Lutherans an answer key, for heavens sake!
