• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

They already have a definition that differentiates between planets and dwarf planets.
How did they arrive at that definition? was anyone not allowed to participate?

I believe the vote was limited to members of the scientific group, and the vote was open to all members.
If you are truly interested in knowing the facts, then read posts 32 & 33 in this thread.

If not ... then don't.

Here's an excerpt:

Only four percent of the IAU voted on the controversial demotion of Pluto, and most are not planetary scientists. The vote was conducted in violation of the IAU's own bylaws on the last day of a two-week conference when most attendees already had left. No absentee voting was allowed. Supporters of the demotion resolution violated the IAU's own bylaws by putting this resolution on the General Assembly floor without first vetting it by the proper committee as IAU rules require.

So I'll ask again: Was anyone not allowed to participate?

From what I can see, members were free to stay and vote on the definition.

Ask the legislatures of California, New Mexico and Illinois if it matters.

No, I'm asking the people on this thread, and by extension you. Why does it matter if Pluto is a planet or not?

The fear of THE LORD is the beginning of wisdom

I fear the Jules.

Perhaps their consciences wouldn't let them?
Like metzger possibly

Early retirement and his information on the decision of poor Pluto was given...tongue in cheek

He was very entertaining

I liked his including sinatra's quote alongside the two philosophers

Understanding is the beginning of all wisdom.
Actually, it's the fear of the LORD that is.

But you Homo sapiens already claim wisdom by virtue of the species you were born into; so why mess with the LORD, right?
