• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Dear Lemonflavor

If something is not right, call your doctor before you stop.

Bear the pain of adjustment to a new med unless the doctor takes you off.

I feel your pain and I know it can be tough, but the only way a doctor will find what works and what does not is to follow his directions and keep in close contact.

I didn't do this at first and it delayed finding just the right meds for me.

It wasn't untill the doctor really got upset with me and explained that if I didn't do what he told me to we would never find the right meds. Because there would be no way to adjust.

Made sence to me and from then on I stayed the course and now I have no problems and I don't even know I'm taking them.

I started on 300mg Lithium a week ago. As it has built up in my system I've been experiencing nausea. It's difficult to brush my teeth at night because it makes me gag. This is very disheartening because I've had trouble with side effects on drugs in the past and wasn't able to get up to a normal dose. (Please don't let this discourage you from trying this long tried and tested drug. I'm unusual in this regard.)

Please pray that this will pass and I will be able to go to a higher dose. If this doesn't work I don't imagine I'd be able to try Depakote either. Thanks.
I get nausea as well from lithium (1500 mg at night) However it still works wonders on my moods. I hope for you that the nausea will subside somewhat and that you may yet benefit from this drug. One thing that really helped me with the nausea was plenty of fluids and take the Litium at night.

I'M SO SICK OF BEING NAUSEATED (caps intentional). I had to go off of Lithium. Went on Trileptal. 300mg was a little nauseating but it subsided a little after a week. So I went up to 450mg a week ago and am still nauseated. 900mg is considered the low end of therapeutic dose, I don't think I'll get there. I thought it was stabilizing me, I at least wasn't having hypomania, but yesterday big depression and anxiety came on out of nowhere.

I'm seeing my doctor on the 17th. Really frustrated.

Dear Lemonflavor

I can't stand that feeling and I have to commend you for staying the course.

We both know you can't go on forever like this before you get relief and patience can only last just so long.

I am only able to work from my own experience. But it was effective with me. I to had a hard time with meds and didn't have a whole lot of patience left.

Under these extreme circumstances I would go in or get myself committed to a mental health care unit.

I would stay there till I was stable. I was there for 28 days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BUT

The treatment was intensive and meds where tried until at least I was headed in the right direction and could live with myself.

I understand your not working. If that is so it might make it easier to do.

I just got my disability claim denied at the reconsideration level. So now I have to go with a lawyer. I'm not happy about that. This process is neverending anxiety.

I'm up to 900mg of Trileptal. The nausea is better and hopefully after a week or two won't be there anymore. But I am extremely tired, sleeping much of the day. I hope this will get better too. I'm not sure if this is the drug for me. It seems to help with anxiety and depression a little, but then makes me tired.

Prayers appreciated, I'm pretty down.

Good to hear from you. I am so thankful the nausea is better. I have had some issues with sedation with trileptal. Currently I take 150 mg in am and 600 mg at noc and have in the past taken 150 mg at noon and dinner, but developed sedation with that eventually and have had to wean. I foudn that spreading out the dose throughout the day helped me greatly with the sedation, but it was frustratiing to remeber 4 times a day doses and i finally bought a cheap med alarm from ebay to remind me.

Kepp in touch with your doc about options and dosing to help deal with the sedation. When i first went on this med i took 2-300mg tabs in am and 3-300 mg tabs at noc, but over the last year I have gradually developed sedation at certain levels and been able to slowly wean back to where I am and remain stable. The cange in mood and energy on this med for me has been amazing.

Just me story, obviously it is not the same for eveyrone, and you must work with your doc on any doseage changes. I keep you in my prayers.

I've gotten up to 900mg of Trileptal for a week. I'm still a little nauseated. I've gone up in dose each week and want to stay at 900 for a while and see if the nausea abates. It's not as bad as it was on Lithium.

The Trileptal helps me with general anxiety and sleep, but as soon as stress is introduced nothing matters. And I'm very tired whether or not I split the dose. No more hypomania. :( I'm going to see my doctor tomorrow. Please pray for wisdom for him.

I'll also be making sure he is fully with me on the disability stuff and hopefully going from there. This is a huge stress.

I think there are side effects to most drugs... my son is ADHD and he gets headakes and sick at his stomach alot. but he has to have the meds to get through school.. the school has no tollerance for ADHD or the child... he stays in trouble even with the meds some times...

My pdoc is with me on disability but he has a strange attitude about it saying he doesn't like lawyers and judges. Anyway I called a lawyer who will take my case but the wait time to see a judge is 1 1/2 to 2 years! What a shock.

My pdoc isn't very sympathetic at all. He couldn't fathom why I was depressed about getting my SSDI claim denied. I've been getting worse since fall and he's wondering why all the drugs I've tried aren't working. I felt like saying, "Well, sometimes people just get worse." I don't know if I should switch doctors.

For now he wants me to stay at 900mg of Trileptal and reduce one of the anti-depressants I'm taking. Seems like everything in life is a long drawn out painful process right now.

One good thing is I've been reading a ton lately (I think this is a gift from God since I don't have the energy to do much else of anything), including reading the whole Bible. I've been working on replacing bad thoughts with Truth. But it's been very difficult.

Needed to ramble. Thanks for the prayers.

Dear Lemon flavor

Lawyers love the waiting time because they get 25% of the back monies do you. So keep this in mind when making your decisions.

Now if you have a GOOD letter from your doctor stating total disability then you have a CHOICE.

You can continue with the appeal in which IF it is won in hearing you will receive the back monies from the date you where denied, LESS 25% of course for your LAWYER.

OR you can immediately cancel the appeal and file a new claim dated the day you fill it out and your case will go forward based on the NEW EVIDENCE.

BUT

You will only get paid back to the day of filing, and of course if no attorney or PAID representative is hired you will not have to pay the 25%

It is a very good idea to have a representative handle your case for you. BUT they can be a NO CHARGE representative. A SS form has to be filled out before they start saying there will be no charge.

The nice thing about a rep. is that they can push your case and the folks at SS don't get offended against you. Besides if it's an experienced rep. he knows the lingo.

Should you decide you would like me to handle the rep. on a no fee basis pm me and we'll talk.

I handle cases up to the time it would go before a hearing judge. Then I would turn it over to whomever you choose to be a paid rep. ( attorney )

I have found through the years if the proper foundation is laid ( being this letter from your doctor ) you will get your disability without delay.

Whatever your decision is make sure and stay the course with your doctor!!!

I an praying fo ryou. The bibilical truths to replace my thoughts has been very helpful for me, but it took time and pratice and I still need to do it. But I eventually got to the place that acaounselor could really help me work even deeper with the bad thoughts I was missing or not identifying correctly. Blessings and prayers.

Hi Lemonflavor,

When I began Lithium almost two years ago I experienced extreme tiredness. I started it during exams (200mgs b/d) and in the first week it was so bad that I'd find myself falling asleep during exams and asleep all day even though I felt a little better in terms of mood.
My reasearch told me that in the first week of Lithium therapy tiredness, tremor and some nausea might be normal but that it should taper off as you said. I hope that you begin feeling better because that extent of nausea sounds a bit extreme.

A couple questions:
Have you changed your salt intake?

Do you take asprin?

Those two factors can cause the Lithium levels in your blood to become too concentrated and could lead to Lithium poisioning? Did you have your thyroid function test done before you started too? I'm due for one soon because I've been getting increasingly irritable and depressed lately (as well as unexplained nausea and headaches) so my levels may be too high.

I'm praying for you brother.

Brianna

I've been taking Lithium for 15 years now. You are correct, it does produce some unfortunate side effects. I can tell you that these almost always die out after two to three weeks. (Fine motor tremors, diarhrea, nausea, dry mouth.)
It is a safe and rather mild mood stabilizer. I take 1,200MG a day. Just be sure to get to the lab when the doctor says because it can damage your liver and kidneys when the level is off. :)
I'm on your side and feel as though you should be just fine and maybe even start to feeling better soon! :D
Take care.

After 11 days on 900mg Trileptal the nausea is pretty much gone. But I'm not sure how much good it's doing at that dose.

But my doctor is so perplexed about why I've gotten worse over the last nine months, he wants to take out drugs one by one to see which is working, which isn't and which may be causing a problem. He has me reducing an anti-depressant which has been awful. This will be a long process.

IF YOU DON'T LISTEN TO THE CLOCK GO: TIC, TOC, TIC, TOC, TIC, TOC +

TIME GOES A LOT FASTER!!!

YOU NEED TO PUT SOME SUN SHINE IN YOUR LIFE AND MAKE AN EFFORT TO MAKE YOURSELF FEEL BETTER BY STANDING IN FRONT OF A MIRROR AND SHOUTING WITH ALL YOU GOT:

" I F E E L G R E A T "

THIS WILL CHANGE THINGS IF YOUR STRONG ENOUGH TO DO IT!!!

TO MUCH LEMON FLAVOR IN A DRINK CAN MAKE IT TASTE BITTER!!!

WORK HARD ON THIS

Stay away from negative thoughts and work on the positive.

Practice saying:

" I F E E L G R E A T "

Say it with all you got till you start to believe it. Do it in front of a mirror. Believe me you CAN train your mind!!!
