• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I started on 300mg Lithium a week ago. As it has built up in my system I've been experiencing nausea. It's difficult to brush my teeth at night because it makes me gag. This is very disheartening because I've had trouble with side effects on drugs in the past and wasn't able to get up to a normal dose. (Please don't let this discourage you from trying this long tried and tested drug. I'm unusual in this regard.)

Please pray that this will pass and I will be able to go to a higher dose. If this doesn't work I don't imagine I'd be able to try Depakote either. Thanks.

Thats strange to hear. I've been on Lith now for almost 12 years and the only thing I experienced was some weight gain.
I take 1500 to 1800 mgs a day depending on the Dr and if she feels it necessary to increase or decrease after having bloodwork done.
Hopefully this will pass.

Dear Lemonflavor

Sorry to hear that your having such a hard time getting the meds right.

Your doing the right thing. Stay the course till the right meds are found.

Do exactly what the doctor says so that they can understand the effect and make the proper changes.

Don't look for the storm but for the GREAT sunshine. Part of the victory will be the hope for the future.

I feel your pain and you have my prayer. I want to feel the sunshine in your heart. Please give it your all.

JUST DON'T TAKE YOUR EYES OFF GOD AND REMEMBER:

XEven though you can't see Him, GOD is there!O
( click on the X and move to the O ) ( then feel who is around you )

Are you saying I'm strange, Mr. Cheeky?

I'm so sensitive to side effects it's ridiculous. My doctor even makes me feel kind of guilty about it, as if I have any control.

I'm going to stick with this as long as I can because I really need a mood stabilizer. I'll wait for the sunshine though sometimes I think it won't come til heaven.

If it sounded that way, I am very sorry. It wasn't meant that way.

Lithium is one of the most tried and true drugs for BP.
It may not always control the depressive cycles well enough, But, It sure keeps those manic cycles in check.

Again, I am sorry if my words hurt your feelings, It was not intended that way at all.

I'ddie4him I didn't see your reply until just now. I was joking. I feel bad that all this time you may have thought I was angry. I'm sorry that didn't come across, I don't like smilies (I'm not a smiley person.) I was just messing with you in a friendly way.

I guess I should be more careful.

--------------
Vent but hopefully not triggering for anyone:

I've almost lost my sense of humor for now. I'm fighting feelings of hopelessness about drugs. I'm going to go another week to 9 days on Lithium which is a real chore with the nausea. One of the few things in life I enjoy is drinking a cup of coffee in the morning and maybe one in the afternoon and coffee tastes terrible right now.

I have no up cycles now on Lithium and the depression isn't any better. If I go up in dose the nausea will get worse.

If Lithium is nauseating I can only imagine what Depakote would do. Topamax would probably be just as bad. I tried Lamictal in the past up to 100mg and it did nothing. That leaves Trileptal or trying Lamictal at a higher dose (with another long excruciating titration) which is an expensive drug.

And I'm stressed about activities this weekend. Could use prayer.

Praying for you!!! For this weekend and that you and your doc would find the right med for you quickly! I also have a sensitivity to side effects and cannot tolerate most meds, but we did eventually find one that seems to work well for me. God bless you this weekend and in the week to come

lemonflavor, I as well am sensitive to different meds. For example, I was on prednisone for a week for a bee sting. I lost around 6 pounds in 3 days. Most people gain weight with it, I lose weight and it's weight I can't afford to lose. Abilify did the same thing. After upping my Depakote to 1500 mgs, my hair started falling out by the handfuls. When I stopped taking it, my hair started growing back again.
Meds work differently for different people, and I've been several years now and still trying to find the right one. My heart goes out to you.
I'll surely have you in my prayers.
God Bless!

I am taking depakote and Im loosing my hair on top, it's awefully thined out for a guy my age. They also have to keep an eye on my liver enzimes. They said it can cause liver damage if not carefully monitored but it is a very rare chance. Nothing to really fear they claim because the chance of that happening is so small.

Now I used to be diagnosed with just anxiety and depression and I was taking Buspar and Trazadone. I have had side effects such as being dizzy, nauseous, loosing hair, very tired and probably a few other's. Ive been on several different medications over the years. It seems every drug they have has a long list of side effects.

Hi Lemon,

Like you I'm extremely sensitive to medication changes. Have you tried taking Ginger tablets?? They helped me alot with getting rid of the nausa. Maybe they will do the same for you. I'll be keeping you in prayer.

colleen

Haven't tried that. Will it make me burp ginger? I hate ginger. I've tried ginger tea even though I don't like it and that hasn't helped.

I was on Trileptal for a while myself. Yes, they do say that Trileptal is the drug without any adverse side effects. I personally didn't have any. Please excuse me for putting it this way, but for about a week, I felt like like my head was buzzing, kinda like an alcohol "buzz." After that small adjustment time, I was okay.

I'm praying exactly this for you, lemonflavor.

For depakote hair loss, it helps some to take a multivitamin with selenium. Doesn't stop the hair loss completely, but does lessen it.

Any Geritol with minerals or similiar vitamins should be enough.
