• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I am 14 and just realized I have OCD after reading the symptoms. Now when I think back as long as I remember I've had ODC. I do NOT perform rituals but I do have irrational thoughts that I realize are irrational I just can't stop thinking about them. Homosexuality (I know I'm not!) Hurting my Dog (I love him to so much!) A bunch of bad things. I do not want to tell my parents. Can anyone guide me? Give me advice?

Jullian welcome ..

The first thing i would like you to know is that many many people suffer from these types of thoughts from all walks of life so you are not alone
The second i want you to know is that it has nothing to do with who you really are ..it is brain noise its not you ..

Now what to do about it ...well if it all possible the very best thing you can do is ignore them ..because when you think about them you actually give them power ,,its like trying to fead a bear to keep him trying to eat you ..the more food you give him the more food he will want and finally he will get you ..
So if you can ignore the thoughts before the thoughts get you ..

When things get too tough though its best to talk it out ..im here if you ever want to talk and please post here whenever you want ,,you will find people who honestly care about you

Hi Julian,

When I was a young boy, I had mild to moderate OCD (though I only saw it in hindsight). I went through a lot of painful circumstances as a teenager, and as a result, I've mellowed out and most of my tendencies have disappeared.

My step-son has full-blown OCD, and dealing with his irrational behavior, thought patterns, and tendencies can range from frustrating to exasperating. He got it from his mother, my wife. So, as you can see, I have quite some experience with this particular disorder.

I've had fleeting moments when I thought about engaging in homosexual behavior, though the very thought of it thoroughly disgusts me. Just a few years ago, I was gripped by a crippling fear that my dog had rabies, and I spent most of my time looking for the symptoms or considering how I could kill him as painlessly as possible. I love my dog very much.

To boil it all down for you, sufferers of OCD generally think that if they don't do a certain thing, something bad will happen. For example, if I didn't kill my dog, he would get rabies.

I advise you to simply repeat this simple phrase when you have an irrational thought: Nothing bad is going to happen if I don't. Make saying this little liturgy a habit. Some of your more mild symptoms will go away as you (or your brain, rather) realizes that the phrase is true.

If your OCD worsens or gets to the point where you are simply afraid that you may do something irrational, you will need to tell your parents and seek out a mental health specialist. I hope it doesn't get that far, you may very well outgrow it, but don't rule out professional help as an option.

It sounds like classic pure o and I would suggest seeing a Psych Doc to get you on some med's. Yes here your going to find alot of ppl who struggle with intrusive thought's that are unpleasent but once you start realizing how the disorder works it get's alot easier. Also you can try the (SIAD) forum too, that's (stuck in a doorway.com. there are alot of ppl ther who struggle with alot of those types of OCD. Here it's pretty much Religous OCD. Hope this helps.

To quote Neil Anderson:

"Scripture clearly teaches that Satan is capable of putting thoughts into our minds. ...These deceptive thought come first person singular in such a way that we think they're our own thoughts.

"...Martin Luther wrote, 'The Devil throws hideous thoughts into the soul--hatred of God, blasphemy, and despair. ...Sometimes he produces such as to make me doubt whether or not there is a God.'

"...David powlison [said], "'Voices' in the mind are not uncommon: blaphemous mockeries, spurts of temptation to wallow in vile fantasy or behavior, pursuasive lines of belief. Classic spiritual warfare inteprets these as coming from the evil one.'

"I have counseled hundreds of believers who are struggling with their thought life. Some have difficulty concentrating and reading their Bible, while others actually hear 'voices' or struggle with accusing or condemning thoughts. With few exceptions these struggles have proven to be a spiritual battle for their mind. This shouldn't surprise us since we have been warned in 1 Timothy 4:1: 'The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons.'

"...Many people will assume the are mentally ill...Are they mentally ill or is there a battle going on for heir mind?...Psychiatrits and psychologists routinely see patients who are hearing voices: chemical imbalance is the standard diagnosis. I believe our body chemistry can get out of balance and cause discomfort and hormonal problems can throw our systems off. But I also believe there are other legitimate questions to be asked, such as, 'How can a chemical produce a personal thought?' and 'How can our neurotransmitters involuntarily and randomly fire in such a way that they create thoughts that we are opposed to thinking?' Is there a natural explanation? ...I don't think we will have a comprehensive answer unless we take into account the reality of the spiritual world.

"...Much of what is being passed off today s mental illness is nothing more than a battle for our minds."

"Our struggle is not against flesh and blood but against the rulers...authorities...world powers of darkness...spiritual forces of evil in the heavens." (Ephesians 6:12)

"The thief [Satan] comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full." (Jesus, John 10:10)

“If you continue in My Word, you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (Jesus, John 8:31-32)

HI Julian,
Welcome to the forum. It's really great to find people who know what you're going through isn't it?
I don't have a lot to add except that it would be good to get in to see a Dr. and get a diagnosis. Also read some of Dr. Stephen Phillipson's articles on Pure "O" OCD @ OCD ONLINE HOME PAGE
Keryakos/Andy's advice was spot on as to how to manage the thoughts so give that another read if you get a chance.
Praying for you,
Mitzi
