I first started working on my novel almost 4 years ago, and at the time it was just something I was working on for fun, but after a ton of revisions and rewrites, I'm about 1/3 of the way through, and hopefully it won't take as long to finish the remaining 2/3! But I've had some of my friends read it, and they have all encouraged me to try to publish it when I'm done (no I don't just think they're being nice...haha) so it's something that I'm giving some serious consideration to. But I'm certainly not expecting it, and it wouldn't be a huge disappointment if it wasn't published.

As for characters, I've never really given any thought as to what actors would be good for which characters, although one of the minor characters in my novel is based on a local politician who has a very distinct personality and appearance.

My characters would probably kill me if they got the chance - they say that writers need to be careful not to be too nice to their characters, but I don't think we have that problem. ^_^ ^_^ Horribly messed-up people are just more fun.

My character has her daughter but mother and child get abducted by the villain shortly after the birth, and then the father gets killed trying to rescue them. Fun stuff, isn't it?

Hah! This isn't a problem for fanfic writers. in fact, there is a whole subgenre of fanfiction called "Hurt/Comfort" fiction and believe me, no one in that category is overly nice to their characters. ;)

What is the primary subject matter in your novel?

Based on what you'd said about your work not being published and not having that mean much to you, do you think because you've placed so much of yourself into it that nothing else but the work seems to matter? In other words, the work stands alone on its own and speaks for itself, regardless of any other acclaim that "would've/could've" been?

The basic premise of the story is about a girl of Middle-Eastern descent who lives with her parents in the United States and goes to college. Her and her parents are falsely accused of being terrorists, and her parents are arrested and extradited to their home country. The girl's boyfriend (an American) is the star of their school's baseball team, and will likely be drafted to play professional baseball when he graduates. However, he chooses to give up his future as a baseball player in order to help her escape. So the novel basically focuses on what happens after she escapes with her boyfriend and they have to survive in the wilderness, avoiding detection while they try to make their way to Canada.

And as for me not worrying too much about it getting published, I guess it's just a matter of me having mostly written it for leisure, without really thinking of whether or not it is of publishable quality. Basically my motivation for writing has always been wanting to just tell a story and have fun doing it instead of writing something that might have a good chance of being published, but isn't really something that I'm too passionate about.

I've only started one book...and have kind of gotten "lost" from it...I've started writing again, and hope to one day finish the book..but I don't expect it to go anywhere. I don't think I'm that good of a writer, and the idea of everyone judging my writing scares me...I'm more just writing for me, right now.
