I just heard recently that not too long ago the White Estate was asked who were the current experts on this question. They responded: David Conklin, Dr. Jerry Moon and Kevin Morgan!

I've told a number of critics that if they had had their heads on straight and looked solely for the truth, with no agenda, they could have done this work.

Latest find (now 223 authors compared):

Godet (1876, p. 373)
... He evidently hopes, by giving this satisfaction to the enemies of Jesus, to awaken the pity of the more moderate ones among them, as well as the compassion of the multitude and the zeal of His friends, and thus to succeed in averting the extreme punishment. Scourging, as it was practised among the Romans, was a punishment so cruel that the condemned person very often succumbed to it. The scourge was made of rods or thongs armed at the extremity with pieces of bone or lead. The condemned person received the blows while fastened to a small post so as to have the back bent and the skin stretched. With the first blows, the back became raw and the blood spurted out....

vs.

McGarvey (1914, p. 713)
... But Pilate hoped that scourging would suffice. He believed that the more moderate would take pity upon Jesus when they viewed his scourged body, for scourging was so cruel a punishment that the condemned person often died under its infliction. The scourge was made of thongs loaded at the extremity with pieces of bone or metal. The condemned person was stripped and fastened to a low post, thus bending the back so as to stretch the skin. Blood spurted at the first blow....

There's more similarity here than in the entire chapter of EGW.

Im kinda new to the party David. So kindly correct me if you will.

You with Kevin Morgan put together a book with Ellen G.Whites Plagiarism? Is that correct? Or are you guys disproving of the charges of plagiarism?

Not sure where your questions are coming from or going to.

In 1988 Dr. Veltman told his readers what needed to be done to prove or disprove if EGW was a plagiarist; i.e, compare and contrast how her literary practices stacked up with other writers of the same time frame and genre. To the best of my knowledge my work is the first and only one of that type (I'm working on a second chapter from DA, chapter 58 on the raising of Lazarus). Back in 2006 I talked Dr. Jerry Moon into writing an article that would present my findings to the scholarly world. That article had looked at 47 authors, I now have 223. Kevin Morgan and I spent two years editing and polishing Dr. Moon's article--he has also worked with E. Marcela Anderson King and they published a work entitled "More than Words" which came out in 2009.

My work shows that EGW did NOT contravene the practices of the day and so she was NOT a plagiarist. I can also say that as the hard bound copy was being bound I realized that Dr. Veltman had proven that EGW was NOT a plagiarist back in 1988.

Did she commit plagiarism as we define it today?

Was it even possible to plagiarize in her day? I mean, if she didn't do it, who did? I'm not asking rhetorically. I am honestly wondering if it was possible to plagiarize in her day, and if so, if anyone did.

I guess plagiarism wasnt that much of a deal during her times... the issue is that people think it all originate with her which is not the case...

take a look at the health reform... was it only happenstance that other (non-sda) doctors had similar ideas prior to the release of her book?

Short answer, no. To use today's standards to judge the past was shown to be wrong by H. M. Paull in his book Literary Ethics--guess what he proceeded to do. We have a more fine-tuned "standard" (nothing written down) on how few words one can use without giving credit. Back then, one could use entire Bible verses, 2-8 lines from a poem, etc. without a word of complaint. In EGW's case, most of her alleged similarities lie within the 3-6 word range and we now know that you only have a probability at that level. You need 16-18 words to be sure that it was copied.

Was it even possible to plagiarize in her day?
Yes. In one case a Thomas D. Suplee (sp?) took a novel written by Mrs. E.D.E.N. Southworth and virtually the only thing he did to it was to change the names of the characters.

The New York Times ran over 1,000 articles on the concept, some of which exposed people for plagiarizing. Off-hand I can think of at least two well-known cases that were documented and in my bibliography I have 5 cases for which we have the judge's opinions on the matter.

This type of thinking is what got people into trouble when they thought that since the Gilgamesh Epic has a creation and flood story, then _obviously_ Moses copied from them. They ignored all the differences between the stories.

They are all taking rather basic common sense approaches to health. No smoking (oh my, who'd I copy that from?!?), get more fresh air (who'd I copy that from?), eat less red meat (here we go again, rampant plagiarism I tell ya!), etc., etc.. Talk to your family doctor and see if he/she gives the same advice, or surf the web and find the same advice--would you accuse them of plagiarism?

Honestly, I didnt expect any better answers from you, David, you are very predictable...

btw didnt EGW even comment on the fact that the other doctors came to similar conclusions? you are the expert, right?

Conklin, have you considered putting it in Kindle or Epub format for e readers? Might get more interest that way.
Can Kindle or other ereaders automatically load and read pdf files?

Just tried a program (Calibre) to convert the pdf into ePub format--it eliminated all of the double columns and underlining!

I know my older Sony reader displays PDF's... no experience with the newer readers though.

Hadn't thought of that. I'll look into it.

Good deal. I would probably get an epub version to check it out.

Though I don't think the plagarism thing is that big of a deal. Does the work simply address plagarism as a legal deal, or do you also address the issue of whether she used a source and then said it was from a vision?

Or are you aware of any such instances?

Nook, and Kindle both display pdf, though in my opinion with varied success. But you will get it into more people's hands through the actual epub or kindle, since that is how they generally download it.

They can display it, though not always the best.

Are the double columns for side by side comparison?

Side by side is probably not best for readers anyway.
