There's a reason why this study is complete and utter crap, every other dog is listed by specific breed. Whereas for bully breeds this umbrella term of "pit bull type" is used. The reason is simple, it's the only way to produce the desired result.
Then again, let's put this in perspective. In 1997-1998 27 people died because of dog attacks. In 1998 alone 15,935 people were killed in alcohol related car crashes. Why aren't we trying to ban booze and cars, truth is your neighbor's Martini and VW are a hell of a lot more dangerous to you than his Bully breed dog.

Drinking and driving is already illegal.

I do not believe the study is utter crap just as I don't believe that the owners of the dogs with such similar physical attributes themselves describe them as pit bulls.

We rescued a 1/2 pit-bull mix from a local shelter. She was the sweetest, smartest, little girl. Now, we did get some advice from another pit owner that we took to heart. Because pits are typically more territorial than other dogs, we were encouraged to introduce her to as many people, animals, and public places as we could. We started that at a very young age, so that was never an issue.
But probably the best piece of advice we got concerned the way we played with her. As has been pointed out in this thread, pit-bulls have an incredible bite power, so we were told to never play tug-of-war with her.. everrrr. And in fact, to teach her to drop whatever she was playing with at a moments notice.

We lost her last year, and we miss her terribly.

As with all isolated cases, each dog is bred and raised differently...
So we shouldnt say they should be outlawed. But possibly put on a list of dogs that need 'special' parents to raise them, and checked on as they age.

So if someone wants to own one, they should have follow up visits to make sure they arent being trained to attack. It is awful to have to be guaged - but the current ownership of PB's stinks out loud. It really ruins the animals.
Ppl will adopt them 'just so' they can make them mean.

So back to the video, which i am afraid to view, it seems these dogs were apparently raised terrible.

I have a lab/retriever, and he is a pussycat. He is more afraid of ppl than being an attacker...but he lets us know ppl are on our property. ;)

WA- there is no dog attack or violence in the OP video. There are dogs running in the video but it is unclear it they are the ones related to the incident.

As long as the dog is unsupecting and relaxed. A pit bull full of andrenalin can soak bullets form a 9mm and sometimes a 12 gauge shotgun!
I read a report of a drug raid in the MidWest were a pit was shot several times with 9mm pistols as she was chewing the leg of an SWAT officer in a drug raid and then shot once with a 12 gauge. She fell to the floor and to the cops dismay she stood again and had to be shot twice!
Dogs can soak bullets better that humans. Big Cats in the other side do not. Cat have a very sensitive nervous system. Dog's is tough.

If you believe that nonsense I've got a bridge in New York I'd love to sell you.

Actually, Terriers have no territory drive due to lack of pack instinct. Terriers are scrappy because of their functions. It takes a tough dog to grab a bull by the nose and not let go, or for a Jack Russel to engage a badger and kill it.
It's utterly absurd not to play tug of war with a bully breed dog, they absolutely love it. There's no reason a bully breed cannot be taught to drop on command and still play tug of war, just like any other dog. While many bully breeds have strong jaws it's mythology to believe they are any different from those of another dog. They are dogs, not alligators for goodness sake.

Then show me a breed standard for a "pit bull."

There is a video on YouTube where the pit bull has locked onto a man's arm. A bistander grabs the pit's hind legs and the dog lets go until the person releases him and the dog spins and then grabs that person's arm. A lady then grabs the dogs hind legs again and the dog lets go of that person. Both the biten people at this point stagger away holding their sore arms- then two police cars arrive...

Well, the cops had not witnessed the first two bites and one with his pistol drawn tells the lady to release the dog. The cop is too surprised when the dog spins and grabs hold of the lady when she releases it. He has to walk around the lady to get a clear shot. he shoots the dog and the startled dog releases the lady. The cop shoots the dog again and the dog runs. The other cop then runs over the dog in his land rover.

This pit bull, that has attacked three people, been shot twice, and run over- is last seen in the video running out of the camera's range with the police in pursuit.

As for the tug of war thing, I will just have to take your word for it.

Oh here we go with the stupid locking jaw myth. Did you know pit bills can chew through solid steel to attack children and the elderly? DId you know pit bulls may rape your wife or daughter?

It is on tape on YouTube.

Must have been special effects, right ?

I will PM a link to anyone who PMs me for the video I described just so long as they agree not to post it in this thread.

Yes, a number of bully breed dogs can grab onto things and hold them very well. After all dogs like the APBT and the Amstaff were bred as butcher's dogs and as such had to grab and hold a bull's nose, not an easy thing to do. However, their jaws ARE NO DIFFERENT from the jaw of any other dog. I've seen countless videos of German Shepard police dogs biting and holding suspects despite being punch, kicked, beaten with pipes, and all sorts of other things. Neither German Shepards, nor bully breeds, have special locking jaws. That's stupidity and mythology believed by a public that simply repeates urban legends because no one thinks anymore. Again, for the love of God, they're dogs not freaking alligators.

I'm sorry, but your comments are completely naive. I'm not even going to go into the territorial part, but as far as tug-of-war goes, I completely diagree. Yes, you can teach a dog to drop a toy on command, but playing tug of war reinforces the 'game' of grabbing and holding on. If in a panic situation the dog has ahold of something he shouldn't and you try to grab it away, he's not going to drop it; he's going to think you are playing.
Police dogs are a perfect example. When they grab and hold, it is taught as a game. They are not vicious and have no animosity toward the suspect, they are playing a (albeit very contgrolled) game they enjoy.
And don't even try to say I don't know what I'm talking about on this one - trust me, I do.

And anyway - catch the part where I said she was a wonderful, loving, very well behaved, non-aggressive dog?

I really do not get it.

I feel that someone is presenting here that there is some kind of unfair conspiracy against dogs categorized as pit bulls.

The fact is that even if you are less likely to be attacked or just as likely to be attacked by a pit- which I don't believe is the case, you are far far more likely to be killed during the attack or injured and disfigured than by other breeds.

ironically, I am watching an episode of Judge Judy right now in which a pit bull attacked a little girl in her own back yard.

Any dog is like that. It's not just the bully breeds. Rough play is always to be discouraged. But that doesn't mean that the game of tug must be avoided completely. A dog needs to be taught to play "tug" properly. It must be taught to have a reliable "out" ("drop it" or whatever the word you use.) It also must be taught not to put a tooth on skin (even accidentally) or all play stops.

Exactly, I completely agree. I'm not in any way limiting it to pits.
Again..... I LOVED my pit bull. Sweeter than ANY other breed we've ever owned.

Yeah, I know. Or they buy pups of a bully or "macho" breed with the intention of making the pups mean.

I had a friend who owned a championship Rottwieler. (Not one of the bully breeds per se, but a "macho" breed and one which can do tremendous damage if not raised properly). The dog my friend had was a sweety (and since the pups were bred right--that was their normal destiny too). However, mostly everyone of the folks who wanted to see the litter were only interested in the fact that the pups were Rottwielers that would make good attack dogs and she overheard them talking about how mean they could make the pups. My horrified friend immediately had her champion female spayed. She was not going to go through that again.

I had a friend some years ago with a Rottweiler named "Lucy". he was teasing her, you know the way people will playfully mess with a dog's muzzle and make funny noises teasingly ?

That dog tore his forehead open. I knew this dog and never would have imagined that from her because she seemed so friendly and timid.

Dogs - like humans turned terrorists - are only mean if you condition them that way. Consider the analogy, go to the root of your criticism, and there you have it. It's almost a form of "racial discrimination." Not that this will change any minds, but here's a site about "pit bull" myths:
