A club in Liverpool is holding a "Pimps and hos" fancy dress night, where the men are supposed to dress up in the stereotypical pimp gear (flashy jewellery, gaudy suit, etc.) and women are supposed to dress up (to quote the flyers) "like you wanna sell your body". Stuff like this really depresses me. I mean, am I the only one who finds it more than a little disturbing that it is such a normal part of popular culture to glamourise an industry built upon brutal violence, sexual exploitation, misogyny and slavery?
Personally, I think its a sad commentary on western society that we have become so materialistic as to glorify the "pimp" as an archetype of urban cool and sophistication, just because of the surrounding aura of wealth.
