  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The problem is that AV SPECIFICALLY said he was using two hula hoops, and then refers to "this object", which is singular.
Nice try; won't work.

Yes it does. You can't make two hula hoops become one hula hoop.
Not even on paper?
Hespera, if I placed a hula-hoop with a diameter of 4 feet inside of a hula-hoop with a circumference of 15 feet, and connected them with a rim, then would not this statement be accurate:

  • This object has a 4-foot diameter and is 15 feet around.
And for the record, I'm not making "two hula hoops become one hula hoop;" I'm making two hula hoops become "this object."

Ah, I missed that bit.

But anyway, if you place a smaller hoop inside a larger hoop, why do you give only the diameter of the smaller hoop as the diameter? Surely you should give the diameter of the complete assemble?

If I put one of my sister in law's hoop earrings (diameter of about an inch) inside a hula hoop with a circumference of 15 feet and connected them with a rim, then wouldn't it be accurate to say that it has a circumference of 15 feet and a diameter of an inch? Clearly I am manipulating measurements, and so are you.
