  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hi there folks. I already know ASP and SQL Server but want to get into the open source stuff. Anybody know of any free (or relatively cheap) PHP and MySQL development environments I can get my hands on. Only snag may be that I only have a Win 2000 machine.

cheers in advance!

I don't think this is the best answer, but I'll share with you what I did (I had only XP Pro and wanted to get into Open Source stuff) just in case nobody else replies.

I had a local computer store put together a P4 1.8 gig machine with 256M machine for me for $300 then added hard, CD and floppy drives from my spare parts supply. I downloaded Red Hat Linux 8 (back then), set up Samba to do file sharing over a Windows workgroup, and then developed PHP while sitting at my main PC in Notepad saving the files on the extra PC and checking them out with either IE6 on mine or Mozilla on the extra PC. I didn't do any MySQL. Everything was free except for the initial hardware.

I won't be at all surprised if someone comes back with a better solution. This was just my approach.

Best wishes and may God bless you.
