phobia: NOUN: 1. A persistent, abnormal, and irrational fear of a specific thing or situation that compels one to avoid it, despite the awareness and reassurance that it is not dangerous.

I thought it would be both fun to hear other's phobias, and "helpful" for those who share real phobias that they struggle with day-to-day. I'm afraid of spiders & other creepy-crawlies, but I'm not "frozen" if I see one like my sister is.

My "irrational" phobias include blue hard candy (long story- basically I've choked twice on the same, blue hard candy when I was little) & clowns. I hate clowns, movies with clowns, etc. My sister e-mailed me a story once that Johnny Depp also has this phobia & even has in his movie contract he won't work with clowns???!!! ;) In fact, a lot of "Gen-X'ers" mysteriously share this fear. My mom thinks it's because that child-murderer (Gacy?) was all over the news when we were kids - he dressed as a CLOWN to get some of the little boys. I think a lot of us were also scarred by "Poltergeist", and the little boy's clown that comes "alive", Stephen King's "It"? Never saw it, never will. *shudders* Anyone see the third Harry Potter movie? A kid turns his fear (a snake) into something funny to not be afraid. He turns it into a CLOWN!! EEEEEEEEKK! Are ya kidding me?? LOL!

My husband is afraid of heights, but I'm not.

How about you - what's your "irrational fear"?

I'm terrified of spiders and heights. I think with heights, it might just be the fear that I'm going to fall, because I never liked doing trustfalls either.
I am arachnophobic. Iam even afraid of dead spiders, pictures of spiders and empty spider eggs.

*Please !*
tell me that was but a typo, & my eyes aren't being DECEIVED hallucinating I just saw: It's
humanly fun?!?! to witness other people & 'struggle with day-to-day terrible phobias';.
Baaad joke.

I'm sure what you, really, intended saying is: 'I think it would be fun to have people, currently suffering from terrible-phobias, come here, & help you rid yourself of such, once & for all, right.
Yes, this I will gladly support.
And to help you get started: (FREE down-load, so none:) of your hard-earned $$$ will be funding some psychiatrist's $Porsche-payments$) Yup this will really move you in
the right-direction ---> http://www.emofree.com/
I tried that years ago, for a Height-phobia, where on the ladder's 3rd. rung I would start freaking-OUT, big-time.
Well,
after running that sorry little bandit thru this exersize but 4 times, the result (the very next day) was: Me climbing with ease onto the top of our house, to the ridge-crest (lol) no less, and examine the tiles, for re-roofing the next month.

How about you help yourself to your own;)splendid success, and share your happy resolution here. I, for one, will be applauding with you, as you explore your next FUN :thumbsup:challenge.

Enjoy your day

fire - as my cousin was badly hurt short before christmas once by a darting flame and 2 months later during a lent party in my class a boy's hair started buring (he wasn't hurt though). But ever after the boys in my class liked to play with fire during lessons (espescially when we were watching films as it then was all dark in class) and I started to get really afraid of school too. Changed school 2 years after all that and it got better. I'm still afraid of fire but it's not that bad anylonger :)

Spiders dolls, and clowns. I have no idea why the spiders and clowns, but I know where the phobia of dolls originated from. The Twilight Zone episode called "Living Doll', about the doll called "Talky Tina", Hi,I'm Talky Tina and you better be nice to me. She killed Telly Salvalas who played the little girl's stepfather and the little girl was afraid of her too.

I used to be afraid of heights too till a leader on a youth camp told me something....I'll better tell you the whole story not just half of it ;)

We were on a trip to a local museum (which was in a very high tower - around 10 floors I think) and at the end of our visit we all went out on top to have a look around - and down. Guess what - I stayed inside. Later in the bus Carmen (that was the leader) asked me why I didn't went out on top and I told her I was afraid of hights. She just simply said there's no reason to be afraid as God is always there watching over you and he won't let you fall down (unless it's his plan with you ;) ).
I didn't understand that right there as I was in a very bad mood that day but since then I keep repeating that to myself - God's there to watch over me all the time and he'll take care of me - and it really got better a lot....

be blessed <><

I'm sort of afraid of spiders but it's really not that bad what i'm really afraid of is performing in front of people. I just have this horrible stage fright and i don't know why the weird thing is i never had that much of a problem with it until i moved form NY to Maryland. I was nervous having to be in front of people for Baptism. I just dont understand it.

There are some tricks professional actors use (maybe you've tried those out already) like imagining all people in their underwear or as dolls. Another one I used to find helpfull when I got nervous was to just think the word bread over and over...helps you to get your mind clear (and to get hungry ^_^).

suz,
I have a huge fear of heights... I am not sure why.
I am also afraid of the dark... however, I know the reason for that.
Hi Shannonkish,
You're a 'psych';)-major, yes? - I wonder if they will teach you, in your classes this:
*FREE, pain-Free, Fast, Easy, spiritually-Safe aid* already I shared (above your post here). -

It's even helped PTSD (war)-sufferers neutralize their terrors.- And rape-victims, and- a slew of other traumas.

Enjoy!
