No, you can say they do not need a purpose, they are intrinsic goals, a self terminating end to what you strive for.
And from the prospective of yourself, that is true.

But from objective observations, in the grand scheme, from the prospective of the universe, these things are pointless.

Now I understand where you are coming from!

The "grand scheme of things" is precisely the wrong perspective to consider. It is a holdover from theology, which tried to place human purposes in God. The perspective of the individual human being is the only purpose that matters in a naturalistic worldview. That is the correct perspective to take.

eudaimonia,

Strangely, that makes sense.

In the same way that speed, time and distance cannot - ever - be observed objectively, we should take the same approach to the idea of 'purpose.'

It is not something that can be observed objectively, but instead subjectively, since it's reference-frame dependent...huh.

My basic philosophy?

Being wrong is usually much more exciting than being right.

I'd extend this: willing to take the risk of being wrong, and trekking in the dark as you make your own path, is always much more exciting than sticking a conservative route and going just by the facts you've already discovered.

Yours sounds cooler, though.

Yours sounds just as good.
