My uber-long Phantom review!
Some of the postives (a short list of them!)
-The movie creates a wonderful enviroment-the sights and sounds are beautiful.
-The singing is fabulous- a wonderful interpretatioin of many of the songs!
-The Conducter, although a small role, is absolutly interesting and fun to watch.
-Meg and Madame Giry both do wonderful jobs in their roles as the friend and mother figure
-If you love theatre, musical, or good singing, you will really like this film.
-The show takes you in, emerses you, almost like a real stage show...
Reasons it is a "good" or "very good" film and not a "excellent" one:
-Some theatre freaks, like me, may be annoyed that the only stagehand with a personality get killed
-some of the dance numbers are a little odd, esspecially the masqurade. It's not the nature of the scene; it is simply that the dance itself, as pointed out by some of dancer friends, a little to modern for 1870 (by about 20 years)
-The very nature of moving the stage play onto the screen takes away some of the mystery surrounding the characters
-The switching back and forth between the story and the prologue are a little unnerving...although strangly necessary for a movie, it doesn't quite fit the nature of the story.
-
The fake snow! Arg!
-Some of the costume and prop continuety, although the props and costumes themselves are wonderful! Top-notch! Fabulous!
-an unfortunete shot of the unmasked Phantom and Rauol that while works onstage, does not work as the medium shot as seen the film close to the end (if you have seen the movie, you probably know what I am talking about)
Summary:
The Phantom himself, Gerard Butler, actually creates a very good Phantom. But one of the things is the mystery and intrigue of the Phantom is taken away by nature of close-ups. This fundementally changes the nature of the Phantom, and while Gerald Butler does a very good job playing the Phantom, it loses some of the mysterious nature that is in the stage show. Emma Rossum, who plays Christine, is great, as are most of the other actors.
But overall, if you like musicals, if you like theatre, if you like the whole "British Male Mystique" thing, or if you like good singing, it's a great, enjoyable movie!
