I have been ga-ga for Brightman for years, so forgive me for being a little skeptical about your glowing endorsement of Ms. Cain. However, I will see if I can pick up a CD or something from the Web to hear for myself--thanx for the 411.
I like Colm Wilkins as well. I do prefer hearing Gary Morris doing Jean Valjean--ever hear the complete symphonic recording of Les Miz? One of the best recordings of anything of all time. Cast members from around the world--New York, Los Angeles, London, Sydney, Tokyo--are spliced cleverly together to create a seamless 3-CD set that is spellbinding. The highlight of it for me is hearing the role of Eponine sing by a Japanese singer who IRL couldn't speak a word of English! A must-have for any musical-phile.
But IMHO, the best Phantom I've ever heard is Robert Guillaume (yes, THAT Robert Guillaume, the cat that played Benson and did the babboon's voice on The Lion King). He starred as the Phantom shortly after Crawford left the Broadway show. During his stay on Broadway, Guillaume performed a rendition of THE MUSIC OF THE NIGHT for some Motown special, I think in '92 or something like that.
