A sales tax is regressive. The poorer you are, in general, the higher percent of income you spend. the rich would just re-invest and re-invest, getting richer and richer and richer without the government touching anything. We would create an obscenely rich aristocracy, making today's rich look like nothing. Meanwhile, the rich are paying a lower tax percent-wise, and since the poor have no money to be taxed on, we end up with the middle class taxed into poverty. Essentially, we devolve back into fuedalism with an upper class and a poor lower class with no in between.

I guess you missed this part of what I said:

A sales tax could exempt people with low incomes

You really need to study the issue to gain a better understanding of what a national sales tax would be all about. As I said, it's none of the governments business how much anybody makes or what the size of their estate is.

Estate taxes are nothing more than immoral double taxation. The income was already taxed, instead of playing the ghoul and trying to get a second bite at the apple the government can just let it go. Furthermore, taxes create an economic dead spot for the money they take. People using what belongs to them to purchase or invest is a lot more important to the economy and helping the average American than the tax money would be.
People receiving small estates are often the ones most harmed by the estate tax. For example, someone getting a home from a deceased relative might be a great help to them. Whereas the estate taxes would force them to go through all the trouble of selling the property and dealing with the government.

Look at Europe, high taxes equal high unemployment. Yet for all of the taxes they still have many of their own social problems. Anyone that's ever visited Hamburg has seen the tranisent population, or the Turkish areas of Berlin aren't that different from American slums either.
Much more so than the US there is a two class society in western Europe, a very small extremely wealthy class and then everyone else. Tax rates don't allow for much inbetween. It's my belief people are better at managing their individual finances than the state would ever be in attempting to care for its population. Look at the USSR, they could barely meet basic needs. Socialism just doesn't work.
