  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I belong to a well known nation-wide health club. When I was in physical therapy school I applied, interviewed, and was offered a job as a personal trainer (which I didn't end up taking) at this same club, so I know what their criteria is to get hired as a trainer there. Let me say, it is very minimal -- a 30 question test (multiple choice and a couple fill in the blanks), and you must take a 1 weekend class to become a certified personal trainer within 3 months of starting there.

Frequently I see people doing exercises under the direction of their personal trainer, which by the way they've had to fork out A LOT of money for, and I see them doing things which could cause them serious injury. I feel obligated to say something to them (especially as I'm now in the profession that get's to rehab them when they do injure themselves), but I never do because I don't want to seem aloof or bother them during their workout. I also don't want to offend the trainer, but it just sickes me that this is allowed to go on. What, if anything, do you guys think would be the appropriate thing to do in this situation?

(I am aware that there are many very good personal trainers out there, so please no one be offended by this. I'm speaking of a very specific club and about several isolated incidents).

That is a great idea, but do you think I'd be overstepping my bounds -- I turned down his job offer previously and now I would go to him telling him I have concerns about his staff?

I just feel like there's no good answer, but I do feel bad for these people because they have no idea they're throwing their money away buying a false sence of security that their health is being looked after by a 'trained professional'. And to top it off, it's not like I could offer them a good alternative. If they really don't know how to workout properly, giving up their trainer is not going to help. But most of them could do just as well, if not better, on their own by watching the people around them.

You will continue to feel bad about the lack of a good answer because there is not one. However, if you are in the field, it may be worth your while to remember that these people are not only lowering the bar for everybody, they are increasing the risk of injury for their clients, which is the exact opposite of what they should be doing. So you need to decide which will make you feel worse:

a. Say something and irritate somebody.
b. Say nothing and let someone get hurt.

Send an anonymous note to management, detailing the situation, and exactly why you think such and such is dangerous, and the people responsible.

???

I don't know what else to say.

I go to a gym where when I am on a treadmill and a retirement age man is jogging next to me with a high heartrate of 180s, I start up a conservation on this. And why I wear a heart monitor, how it was cheap, walmart, under forty dollars. Only one of the men got mad at me. I know that 180s is not a good heartrate for anyone, let alone a retirement age person who has told me, "I am 67 and I've been jogging for years blah-blah-blah" I don't go around preaching on heartrate monitors but if someone has gray hair and is obviously in that upper age range and I also see their heartrate and it is WAY OFF, not just a little off, I really feel like I should say something. Some men are really pleasant to talk to though. I really try to indirectly bring the subject up by saying how nice it is to jog with the machine recording my heartrate without using sensors because I am already wired. If you wear a monitor the machine will always show the heartrate, if you don't, you have to test it often. When you always see it, you can adjust your effort easily when you wish. Running is a sport where the heartrate is the hardest to control. On a treadmill, it is easier, but it still can flare up quickly and for you to not know it if you are not testing it often or not seeing it all the time. That doesn't happen on a bike or swimming because the heartrate is lower. The people who use the bike don't usually use much effort ironically. The people on the mills are manics lol. I really try to open a conservation that doesn't seem like I have an agenda in some way lol. I mean it really concerns me. I know how you feel.

Depends. By and large the most common certification for personal trainers in the USA is the ACE, and they are terrible. Little more than how to sell fitness to the gullible, with little emphasis on the actual working knowledge of biomechanics, exercise programing and prescription, etc. Most orgs are hit or miss, sometimes you can find a good trainer, sometimes you can not.

The two best, IMO, are the ACSM and the NSCA, which are the only orgs to publish acredited journals with peer reviewed research. While finding a trainer from one of them is still no guarantee of excellence, the odds should be a bit more in your favor.

oh hey, since y'all are talking about PTs.... I was looking into getting one to help me shed some pounds of fat and tone up the muscle, but in a manner that is good for me. any suggestions on finding a good trainer? or am i just outta luck and stuck with the kids payin their rent while in school that really dont know any more about it than i do?
Another good thing to do would be to interview the trainer. Afterall, if you're going to be spending all that cash, you have a right to know what he know's before you pay him for his services.

Finding out what his/her thoughts about supplementation/pills are, is a good idea. This helps you to make a judgement if you are on the same page. If he is a fan of supplementation, ask what kind of formal nutrition education he has -- if he doesn't recommend you talk to your MD before starting a supplement plan...red flag -- he has no way of knowing if what he recommends will interact negatively with any other drugs you may be on, or if you have allergies to an ingredient.

Ask what his history is...how long has he been training, are there previous clients of his you could contact (you don't necessarily have to do this, but if he says 'no', that might tell you he has something to hide), what training outside of the certification does he have, etc.

Finally, it may seem bold, but don't be afraid to give him a pop quiz. Ask what he would tell you to do if you were aiming for a 30 minute run and 10 minutes in to it your foot starts tingling or going numb. --*note: 'run through it' is not a good answer here.
Ask how you stretch both muscles in the calf. -- This is a good question, because most people only do one type of calf stretch (toes/forefoot up with the knee straight) however there is another big muscle in your calf called your soleus which you stretch the same way as you do the gastroc (see the aforementioned stretch) but you do it with your knee bent, because the soleus doesn't cross the knee joint.

Good luck

oh ok. well come new years when the club near me opens i shall find out the qualifications of their trainers.

however, if someone just comes up with a "work out plan" and thats all they do... is it necessary to have some super huge qualifications? or would it just be me forking over money for them to come up with what i would have come up with on my own?

Option B is normally the case.

You could, of course, workout out some sort of plan of your own and post it for people to comment on. Cookie cutter programs are terrible. The keys to any successful program include, but are not limited to:

1. Progressive resistance: To continue to improve, you must increase the weight you are using when lifting. The weight increases do not always have to be large, but they must occur from time to time.
2. Covers the entire body. Muscle groups must not be neglected, to avoid strength imbalances as well as protect from injury. For example, strong hamstrings help protect the patella tendon during stress.
3. Compound exercises: Squats, deadlifts, bench, chins, rows, etc. are far superior to tricep kickbacks, lateral raises, and leg extensions. If you want to use isolation exercises, they should be used in addition to the multi-joint movements that are the basis of a good routine.
4. Adapatability: Any rountine should be able to be changed to allow for greater progress, injury, etc.
5. Diet is essential.
6. Be consistent.

Good luck.

Being a member of the NSCA kinda helps.

:)
I don't know how strict you guy's in the states are, but here, If you are a member of our National & Provincial organizations, you must constantly keep continuing ed. credits, practicum hours & yearly assements by assesors.
You can't just call yourself a trainer up here, you need the credentials, training & affiliation with one of the few organizations.
