Mark 14:3
And being in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at meat, there came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard very precious; and she brake the box, and poured it on his head.
Here we can see a woman doing something out of love for Jesus. But others quickly come up against her actions.
Mark 14:4-5
And there were some that had indignation within themselves, and said, Why was this waste of the ointment made? For it might have been sold for more than three hundred pence, and have been given to the poor. And they murmured against her.
Indignation is basically anger. So this shows that others got angry with her, because they thought she should have done things differently. They even spoke against her.
Mark 14:6
And Jesus said, Let her alone; why trouble ye her? she hath wrought a good work on me.
Jesus tells the others to leave her alone, she is only doing good works. As followers of Jesus it is our job to be performing good works, just as this woman did.
May we learn not to become angry with our brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus, and speak out against them. When we see them performing good works out of their love for Jesus. In a manner that we might not think is fit. For Jesus is most likely smiling down upon them.
Mark 14:7-8
For ye have the poor with you always, and whensoever ye will ye may do them good: but me ye have not always. She hath done what she could: she is come aforehand to anoint my body to the burying.
Just as this woman prepared Jesus for his burying, We must be out preparing others for his return.
Mark 14:9
Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her.
Though others were upset about this womans actions, and called them into question, we can clearly see that Jesus was very pleased by them.
Heavenly Father,
Teach us to be about performing good works so that your name will be glorified, and others can learn of your goodness and mercy. Also teach us not to worry ourselves about what manner others use to perform good works unto your name. For they are simply doing what they can.
Thank you for this.
In Jesus name I pray. Amen!
