You seem to be distinguishing between mortal and venial sins.
I'm not. I say they all count. Why?

Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness. (1 Jn 3:4)

The segregation of sin into categories for the purposes of determining which ones send a person to hell and which ones don't send a person to hell fundamentally ignores the source of sin, which is a sinful heart. Jesus Himself pointed this out. So, if you see big or little sins coming from out of you, you can rightly judge that they come from an evil heart. Overcoming the evil heart, therefore is a key objective of salvation, and it can only come through becoming alive to God when Jesus comes to live in your heart by grace through faith and you become a new creature - one spirit with Him (1 Cor 6:16). From that point on, there is no condemnation for the sins (big and small) that emenate from the flesh. Not knowing these fundamental truths of Christianity leads to focusing on the symptoms of the heart problem (big sins vs little sins) and not the heart problem itself.

There is no "if" in verse 26 because there are no subjunctive verbs. There is only a statement concerning those who go on sinning on purpose after they hear the gospel. That's the first point.

Truth but it is not that simple, hence why a lot of translations insert if in the clause, "If we are sinning wilfully" I am good either way it is translated.
The second point is that if the "purposeful sins" are all sins, then nobody is ever saved, first because everyone sins after they are saved, and second because for those making the dreadful bistake of sinning after they are saved "there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins" (i.e., they cannot be forgiven).

It is a translation issue. The clause is being stated in the present tense, active voice and it is a participle in the genitive case. It is a state to which the "we" would be in, not a one time act.

Heb 10:26 Ἑκουσίως Willingly
γὰρ For
ἁμαρτανόντων of Sinning
ἡμῶν We

The third point is that the context, as I stated before, is the whole book of Hebrews. And that makes this paragraph the culmination of all that is being said in the book. Bet even if that were not so, it is very clear that the words in Hebrews 10:29 are describing the one who goes on purposefully sinning after he receives the knowledge of the truth: "Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace?" (Heb 10:29) This definately describes a person who, upon hearing that Jesus died for his sins and offers reconciliation with God in return for trusting Him with the sfekeeping of his soul, rejects the premise and refuses to put his trust in Christ. It does not apply to a person who, for instance, gets cut off in traffic and curses the other driver under his breath.
The context of verse 26 is being stated in connection to verse 25 which is exhortation to not forsake the assembling of ourselves and to exhort one another daily. That is being stated in reference to us who are being sanctified, which is the present tense (14), actively happening. And how the us who are being sanctified are perfected as the holy Ghost has said before in that He witnessed saying God will put His Law in our hearts and in our minds write them (14-16). This is the knowledge of truth they had received. In this state if we are sinning willfully then there remains no more sacrifice for sins. Only judgment and fiery indignation which shall devour the adversary, The we who are sinning willfully after receiving, taking part in this knowledge of the truth. These are those who have drawn back unto perdition casting away their confidence, Not doing the will of God unto the saving of their souls. Be not partakers with them.

So do you believe a persons good works will perfect them forever before a Holy God ?
No person can do good works without the actual grace of God helping him. It is God's grace that makes a person's works profitable (helpful) for that person's ultimate eternal salvation.

Titus 3:8 The saying is sure. I desire you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to apply themselves to good deeds; these are excellent and profitable to men.

James 2:22 Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect?

Salvation is a lifelong process. It is not a one-time event.

2 Peter 1:1-11 Simon Peter, a bondservant and apostle of Jesus Christ,
To those who have obtained like precious faith with us by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ:
2 Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, 3 as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, 4 by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
5 But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, 6 to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, 7 to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. 8 For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 For he who lacks these things is shortsighted, even to blindness, and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins. 10 Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble; 11 for so an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Matthew 22:14 “For many are called, but few are chosen.”

James 1:21-22 Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. 22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.

Good day, Jan

This is not necessarily a judgment but a separation of the sheep from the goats.

He is the good Shepard he knows his sheep and His sheep know him and they being sheep hear His voice.

Sheep do sheepy thing because they are sheep, a goat could do sheepy things but that does not make them sheep, they are Goats.

Hi Bill. Thank you for commenting.
Regarding the sheep and the goats, I believe Jesus is telling us how He will judge us. He will judge us on how well we "did" His "word".
James 1:21-22 Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. 22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
We "do" His "word" by obeying His commandments and we do His word by doing the good works that His Father prepared for us to do.
Ephesians 2:8-10 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
1 John 2:3-4 We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. 4 Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person.

Pick up Matt 7:22

Mat 7:22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’

Sure they did lots of stuff, But Jesus never knew (verb) them. He never exerted any energy to be in a relationship with them.

Ephesians 2:10 a command really how do you get that grammatically from the text.

We are His work
He created us in Christ (He did it)
The good works are prepared by Him for us.
Because of His work we walk in them (cause and effect)

In Him

Bill

Jesus desires that all people come to Him to be redeemed from Adam's sin and saved from their own sins through their faith in Jesus and through the work of Baptism as Jesus commanded in Matthew 28:18-20.
1 Timothy 2:3-6 This is good, and pleases God our Savior, 4 who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all people. This has now been witnessed to at the proper time.
Mark 16:16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.

Jesus teaches that some people believe in Him for a while but they fall away later through their own evil works and/or their own lack of good works towards their God and their neighbors.
Luke 8:12-14 Those along the path are the ones who hear, and then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. 13 Those on the rocky ground are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away. 14 The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life’s worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature.

Ah, so sinning is just fine once you are saved, big sins or little sins. I misunderstood you.

That is a red hering thrown out by people who do not want to admit that their sins (big and little) come from the same evil heart.

Unrepented mortal sin requires eternal hellfire but unrepented venial sin does not.

"Mortal" sins and "not mortal" sins (aka venial sins) per 1 John 5:16-17:

If any one sees his brother committing what is not a mortal sin, he will ask, and God will give him life for those whose sin is not mortal. There is sin which is mortal; I do not say that one is to pray for that. 17 All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin which is not mortal. RSV
Unrepented and unconfessed venial sins make it easier for a person to later fall away from his faith because his conscience gets negligent and therefore he can be more easily tempted to commit a mortal sin.
Just one mortal sin causes the loss of the Holy Spirit's sanctifying presence in a person's soul. If this person does not repent and confess this sin before he dies, he will not be approved to enter/inherit eternal life. It is the Holy Spirit's abiding presence in a person's soul at the time of his death which guarantees that he will be approved to inherit/enter into eternal life. 2 Corinthians 1:21-22 If the Holy Spirit is not present in your soul at the time of your death, Jesus will claim that He does not know you. Luke 13:24-28 He will claim He never knew you. Matthew 7:22-23

1 John 5:16-17 If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin which does not lead to death, he will ask, and He will give him life for those who commit sin not leading to death. There is sin leading to death. I do not say that he should pray about that. 17 All unrighteousness is sin, and there is sin not leading to death. NKJV

"Sin leading to death" is unconfessed and unrepented "mortal sin". If the person does not confess and repent the mortal sin before his death, he will receive condemnation ("a death sentence" meaning he loses eternal life) instead of inheriting eternal life with God.

Jesus gives us an example of venial sin which will require a "cleansing" fire also called a "purging fire" after death which is the punishment for unrepented venial sins 1 Corinthians 3:12-15, Hebrews 12:29 and Jesus also gives us an example of mortal sin which will require hellfire after death which is the required punishment for unrepented mortal sins:

Matthew 5:21-22 You have heard that it was said to the men of old, ‘You shall not kill; and whoever kills shall be liable to judgment.’ 22 But I say to you that every one who is angry with his brother shall be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother shall be liable to the council, and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ shall be liable to the hell of fire.

"Liable to the council" refers to the Sanhedrin Council which meted out punishment such as prison time for people who were convicted for breaking Jewish laws. Jesus uses this as a metaphor for a person's punishment in the purging/cleansing fire after death.
Anger at a brother is considered neutral unless this anger escalates into insulting his brother. Insulting his brother is a venial sin. Anger at a brother which escalates into contempt for his brother is a mortal sin. Every person is created in the image and likeness of God Genesis 1:26-27 and therefore showing contempt for any one of God's human creatures is a grievous sin. Matthew 5:43-45
Jesus gives us another metaphor regarding this purging/cleansing fire as a prison:
Matthew 5:23-26 So if you are offering your gift at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. 25 Make friends quickly with your accuser, while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison; 26 truly, I say to you, you will never get out till you have paid the last penny.
Unrepented mortal sin requires eternal hellfire but unrepented venial sin does not.

There are many things wrong with the theology in this post. The most egregious are 1) that Jesus' one sacrifice was not for all sins, and 2) that the presence of the Holy Spirit in a person's heart is a perishable gift.

The Holy Spirit abides/remains only in the people who continue to obey God's commandments.

Acts 5:32 And we are witnesses to these things, and so is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey him.”

Hebrews 10:26-27 For if we sin deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a fearful prospect of judgment, and a fury of fire which will consume the adversaries.
2 Thessalonians 1:7a-9 when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels in flaming fire, 8 inflicting vengeance upon those who do not know God and upon those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. 9 They shall suffer the punishment of eternal destruction and exclusion from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might,

sin is not lawlessness, this is taught by israel law keepers, stop hearing them Christian forum.

sin is what law keepers do, observing law, and not observing or following faith.

Jesus Christ is the faath that had all their ordinances ( rules) nailed to HIs cross, why would we hear them when they are only interested in crucifying Christ. ( as israel the law keepers did)

the faith of israel is plain to see f or the world right now, they kill, so all their words kill too, stop hearing the word of death, hear the word of life, and thy are finished, just see all my posts on this whole forum.

I didn't see in those verses any verification of your premise that God removes His Spirit from the hearts of those in whom He lives when they fail to obey His commandments. Don't bother trying to find any that say it, because there are none. Quite to the contrary, as Hebrews 12 says, the Lord chastens those who through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit have become His children. He does this from inside their hearts. He does it for our good, though the chastening is not pleasant but painful. Yet when we are trained by it, it produces the peacable fruit of righteousness. Those without the Spirit of God in their hearts do not experience this chastening and, by definition, they do not belong to God. That is how God deals with the sins of those in whom He lives.

here is chastening....

Luke 14:7 And he put forth a parable to those which were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms; saying unto them.
8 When thou art bidden of any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room; lest a more honourable man than thou be bidden of him;
9 And he that bade thee and him come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room.
10 But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee.
11 For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

Luke 18:9 And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others:
10 Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican.
11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.
12 I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess.
13 And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.
14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

Since those for whom Christ died have been both Sanctified and Perfected forever by His Death, and we know all without exception have them eternal blessings, it stands to sanctified reason, Christ didnt die for all without exception, but only for all the ones both Sanctified and Perfected forever Heb 10:10,14 !

The Holy Spirit is the Sanctifying Grace of God and it is His abiding presence within a person which makes him worthy of inheriting eternal life. It is the Holy Spirit's continuing presence within a person which continues to sanctify (save) him.
If a person sins a deliberate serious sin such as adultery, he no longer has the Holy Spirit's sanctifying (saving) grace abiding within him. The Holy Spirit cannot live in a person who has defiled his own temple by his own serious sin. 1 Corinthians 3:16-17

Romans 11:22 Consider therefore the kindness and sternness of God: sternness to those who fell, but kindness to you, provided that you continue in his kindness. Otherwise, you also will be cut off.
Galatians 5:4 You who are trying to be justified by the law (of Moses) have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace.
Hebrews 10:26-27 If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, 27 but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God.
If a person is a Christian and commits adultery, Jesus' sacrifice on the cross which first saved him when he first became a Christian, will no longer save him because the Holy Spirit no longer lives in his soul/heart/mind.
2 Corinthians 13:5 Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you are disqualified.

A person becomes disqualified from the faith of Jesus because of the serious sin that he committed.

The Holy Spirit is given to and remains in the people who continually obey God's commandments. He does not remain in the people who sin serious sins against God's commandments.

Serious sins which do cause the loss of the Holy Spirit's sanctifying presence within a person:

Galatians 5:19-22 The actions that are produced by selfish motives are obvious, since they include sexual immorality, moral corruption, doing whatever feels good, 20 idolatry, drug use and casting spells, hate, fighting, obsession, losing your temper, competitive opposition, conflict, selfishness, group rivalry, 21 jealousy, drunkenness, partying, and other things like that. I warn you as I have already warned you, that those who do these kinds of things won’t inherit God’s kingdom.

I will first note that you still have not provided a single verse that says the Holy Spirit exits a person's heart after he sins. The reason for this is that no such verse exists. And why would it? We who have the Holy Spirit in our hearts have eternal life, and we will never perish.

I don't think we'll be able to resolve our differences on eternal security, but I am curious about some things eternal security deniers believe. For instance, if a person that was saved becomes lost because of a serious sin, can he/she get saved again? I ask because there is a certain finality in all the verses you referenced above, especially the one you didn't quote: "If any man destroys the temple of God, God will destroy him, for the temple of God is holy, and that is what you are." (1 Co 3:17 NASB)

It does not seem plausible that God would enter a person's heart (making him His child, a new creation) then leave and destroy him because of sin, then return again into the same person's heart (again making him His child, a new creation). And it seems even less plausible that this process could continue to happen over and over and over again ad infinitum. Since we have no Scriptures indicating anything remotely similar to this (i.e., God inhabiting/exiting/inhabiting/exiting/inhabiting/...), the only plausible alternative to eternal security is that if a saved person commits a serious sin and loses his salvation, then he is lost forever.

We can know that the Holy Spirit removes Himself from our souls when we sin spiritually deadly sins because He is given to only the persons who obey God and He remains in us, sanctifying us, if we continue to obey God. 2 Corinthians 1:22

Acts 5:32 And we are witnesses to these things, and so is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey him.”

Titus 1:16 They profess to know God, but they deny him by their deeds; they are detestable, disobedient, unfit for any good deed.

1 Peter 4:17-19 For the time has come for judgment to begin with the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will be the end of those who do not obey the gospel of God? 18 And “If the righteous man is scarcely saved, where will the impious and sinner appear?” 19 Therefore let those who suffer according to God’s will do right and entrust their souls to a faithful Creator.
Scripture gives us the answer to Peter's question:

2 Thessalonians 1:7a-9 when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels in flaming fire, 8 inflicting vengeance upon those who do not know God and upon those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. 9 They shall suffer the punishment of eternal destruction and exclusion from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might,

Serious (spiritually deadly) sin separates us from God.
We separate ourselves from God by choosing to sin serious sins. When we sin, God is always waiting for and desiring our confession and repentance so that we are again reconciled to Him.

God is always desiring to reconcile with His children, no matter how many times they sin serious, spiritually deadly sins.

1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just, and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Matthew 18:12-13

It is the spiritual state of our soul at the moment of death which determines where we will spend eternity.

Ezekiel 18: 20-24 The soul that sins shall die. The son shall not suffer for the iniquity of the father, nor the father suffer for the iniquity of the son; the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself.
21 “But if a wicked man turns away from all his sins which he has committed and keeps all my statutes and does what is lawful and right, he shall surely live; he shall not die. 22 None of the transgressions which he has committed shall be remembered against him; for the righteousness which he has done he shall live. 23 Have I any pleasure in the death of the wicked, says the Lord God, and not rather that he should turn from his way and live? 24 But when a righteous man turns away from his righteousness and commits iniquity and does the same abominable things that the wicked man does, shall he live? None of the righteous deeds which he has done shall be remembered; for the treachery of which he is guilty and the sin he has committed, he shall die.
It is the Holy Spirit's presence within a person's soul which gives the soul its "spiritual" life/righteousness. As long as the person remains righteous, the Holy Spirit will continue to sanctify him. The Holy Spirit will leave the person's soul if he commits spiritually deadly sins. Without the Holy Spirit's spiritual presence within the person, the person's soul is spiritually dead. If he does not confess these sins before death, he will not be approved to inherit eternal life.

1 Peter 5:7-9 Cast all your anxieties on him, for he cares about you. 8 Be sober, be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking some one to devour. 9 Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experience of suffering is required of your brotherhood throughout the world.
