Acts 9:10 In Damascus there was a disciple named Ananias. The Lord spoke to him in a vision, “Ananias!” “Here I am, Lord,” he answered. 11“Get up!” the Lord told him. “Go to the house of Judas on Straight Street and ask for a man from Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying.

29 He talked and debated with the Grecian Jews, but they tried to kill him.
30 When the brothers learned of this, they took him down to Caesarea and sent him off to Tarsus.

Acts 11:24 Barnabas was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith, and a great number of people were brought to the Lord.
25 Then Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul,
26 and when he found him, he brought him back to Antioch.

Acts 21:39 But Paul said, I am a man which am a Jew of Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, a citizen of no mean city: and, I beseech thee, suffer me to speak unto the people.

Acts 22: 3 I am verily a man which am a Jew, born in Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, yet brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, and taught according to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers, and was zealous toward God, as ye all are this day.

    'Tarsus' a city in Cilicia

This is the account of Noah’s sons Shem, Ham, and Japheth, who also had sons after the flood. 2 The sons of Japheth: Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras.

And the sons of Javan; Elishah, and Tarshish, Kittim,

Adding to those sons what Jospheus had to say about them.

    Elishah - Aeolians

Kittim - Cethimus possessed the island Cethima: it is now called Cyprus; and from that it is that all islands, and the greatest part of the sea-coasts, are named Cethim by the Hebrews: and one city there is in Cyprus that has been able to preserve its denomination; it has been called Citius by those who use the language of the Greeks, and has not, by the use of that dialect, escaped the name of Cethim.

Tarshish - Tharsus to the Tharsians, for so was Cilicia of old called; the sign of which is this, that the noblest city they have, and a metropolis also, is Tarsus, the tau being by change put for the theta

Interesting to note that this was written during Paul's life, Josphephus lived 37 A.D. to about 100 A.D. During Pauls life there in Jerusalem 'Yosef ben Matityahu' as was his given name would have been a babe when Paul was 'converted'.

What I posted there is from Josphephus, Do you have any information that says it was Spain and that Cilicia was in Spain?

Cilicia is not in Spain. Sorry, I assumed the identification of Tarshish with Spain was established beyond dispute. This is why I didn't quote a reference.

But the Wikipedia article gives other choices. I guess it could be Tarsus in Cilicia.

    Tarshish - Wikipedia

It looks like Trashish is more likely Spain or Tunisia.

Throughout history we can find a similarity of spellings of men and places quite distance from one another. Perhaps the reason Paul often expressed his transformation was because his family lineage wasn't "full-blooded" Jewish ancestry. Although Paul did consider himself an observant Jew (Phillipians 3:5) more from the perspective of the LORD than from Judaism's 613 legal requirements.

He is not a Jew who is one outwardly in the flesh.
Whether man or woman circumcision is of the heart.

Neither Jew nor Gentile, nor is there male and female,
for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed
and heirs according to the promise.

    Firstly;
What variation of acts is being cited from?.
Bible Gateway passage: Acts 9 - Complete Jewish Bible

I noticed a certain pattern illustrated as the man Paul is described to be heading down from a Greco descriptive terrain to other terra disclosed in an adjective manner.

Is down still considered a southerly direction?
    If so.
Perhaps the message being conveyed is that ole sh'aul is leaving the arrogance of each starting with the greco and returning to his brethren.

    Just a thought

For readers who are curious about mishnah and tradition from schools of certain houses.
There is a traditional teaching that אֶת-עֵבֶר (eber) is the only family that was not involved in the building of Babel.

    Hmmmm....
אֶת-עֵבֶר (eber) reminds me of 5 loaves of unleavened bread.

While you addressed the "birth place of ole sh'aul".
I wondered about the birth place of Yeshua formally known as 'nazir.
Hence my description of david being a warrior 'monk.

Look closer and you will find the 6 1 3 in the menorah.
    (6) branches.
Fed from a single (1) staff.
And (3) intersections reminding the whole of the faithful where to meet.

I mention eber in thought of acts 26 where ole sh'aul heard a distinct language that I presume has been unchanged in every linguistic variation of translated holy script.

As for the expressed formality of tarsus.
I believe its an expression of Paul's first step.

    Blessings Always
