Parenting for Everyone??

Hi all,

I need some advice...

I've been married for 12 years and have a wonderful marriage, although my husband is not a believer right now. I know someday he will be an awesome man of God.

I'm 36 (almost 37) and my hubby will be 40 in 2 weeks. We have had very few conversations about having children. We both felt ambivalent about it. When we married, we were both unbelievers (although we thought we were Christians). I accepted Christ as my Lord and Savior about 2 1/2 years ago.

Here is my question - is it God's will that all marriages produce children? I feel that I'm in a situation right now where I would like to put that decision off until my husband is a believer. Normally, I don't worrry about such things. However, and I'm going to get graphic for a moment, we had sex last night and the condom broke! There is a good chance I might get pregnant.

I guess if it's God's will, it will happen. I just wanted to wait until we were both ready. But I'm not sure God wants everyone to have children. What are your thoughts?

Thanks so much... and Happy Thanksgiving!

Hi Etharia,

That's a very good question. I have always wondered this, even before I became a Christian. Now that I might be pregnant, I'm really wondering! ;)

If I am, then I believe it's God's will and I will embrace it as a blessing from Him. But I was just curious what other Christians thought. If they believe marriage is primarily for procreation.

Hope this clarifies why I am asking the question. I meant to indicate that in my post (that I would feel blessed, if not prepared!).

Thanks for taking the time to respond.

Love in Christ,

Do all marriages produce children? If your answer is "no" then it's obviously not God's will that all marriages produce children. You even state an understanding of that in this very post:

I guess if it's God's will, it will happen.

My advice to you,...seek ye first the Kingdom of God. Seek to be an obedient child of your Father before you seek to have the added pressures of parenthood. Having, and raising, children (I have three) is a wonderful blessing no doubt. However, it is, in no way, an easy task. It's rewards are many but the main thing you should do is trust in the Lord that if it be His will that you and your husband have children then you will. In the meantime, seek to be as prepared as possible by immersing yourself in His Word and reading as many biblically sound parenting books as possible. One I highly recommend is "What the Bible Says About Child Training" by J. Richard Fugate.

Thanks so much... and Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving to you as well.

God bless,
Don

One thing I would tell you: If you are pregnant, you are already a parent -- like it or no -- and the fact that God has opened your womb proves it is His will for you to have a child.

The Scripture tells us that children are an unqualified blessing from God. Why would you ever reject or question something that God says is a blessing? Would you reject the blessing of more income? More land? Why is it that suddenly when God gives the blessing of children that we start asking such questions?
