  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

A parakeet can be a great pet, I had one that lived over twelve years, about 6-7 years is the normal life span. A bird needs water to wash themselves, they splash water on there feathers to rid them of the fine dust they have, really it's just dry dead skin. You could place a small bowl in the bottom of the cage and see if he would get in it and wash. Enjoy the bird, I really loved mine, don't be supprised if he starts talking, Parakeets are great talkers, but few ever do.

I have 2

1 Likes bath, 1 likes misting.

FYI with proper diet the avg life span is around 15 Years, on a seed only diet it is less.

What are you feeding them ?

1) No Airfreshiners use around them
2) No Teflon cooking around them
3) No Grit !!
4) Convert them to a pellet diet if possable (Better for them)

Also if you are unable to speend a lot of time with them or they are alone for a long time of the day, it is best to have 2 then.

Does anyone have a parakeet? I've read that you should let them play in water. My parakeet doesn't like to play in water. He doesn't really like to get too far away from his cage.

I have one parakeet named Harry (after Harry Potter) and he actually likes for me to sit him on my finger and dip water on him with my other finger. It is weird..but it is an owner-pet bonding experience :)

I have two :D

how are you trying to give your budgie a bath? you can get those little baths that you can stick right on the floor of the cage, or hang off the door of the cage. but you may have to leave the bath in with the parakeet for a while, sometimes it takes awhile for them to warm up to the idea of actually getting wet lol.

my birds are polar opposites of eachother. As soon as I put the bath in, Joey jumps in immediately, and if I'm using the bath with the mirror on the bottom, he'll finish his bath quickly and just spend the rest of the time sitting on the side of the little tub talking to the bird in the mirror.

Angel on the other hand has to sit back and watch Joey play in the water first before deciding that its probably safe for him :p

but typically you'll find that budgies generally don't like to be outside of their cages, because well their cage is there home heh. You have to train them slowly to get used to being out side of the cage, just spend a few minutes each day playing with your parakeet outside of the cage, and he should get used to it pretty quick; just make sure there are no other animals around when you let him out, or any way for him to fly outside of the house.

pgp gave some excellent advice for caring for parakeets. a couple of other things to keep in mind are make sure you're not burning any candles around them, some parakeets are fine around candles, but for many they can be toxic, and be sure to keep your bird away from any drafts, as they can be quite dangerous for the little guys health too.

okay thats it, I'm done rambling lol.

I have three parakeets. I take them out sometimes and once me and my cousin wore three layers of gloves and took them outside on the porch. They didn't fly away, just squirmed a little. And then, once you pet their heads and back, they close their eyes. My first parakeet ever I kept up high and close to the window so she could see all the other birds and chirp to them. She was a talkative one. I named her Lily. BUt one day we came back from a trip and she had died. There was plenty of food and water left, so we think she got lonely or cold. Then I got two parakeets, and then another one and they are my parakeets I have today. Last year I got another one for a 4H project and kept it in a seperate cgae from the others. The cage was close to the other bigger cage and she and the other birdies talked a lot. But it was too smart and opened its door one day when we went to the grocery store. My dog is a bird dog, caught the bird, and chewed it up. It was really gross. So I think we'll just stick with 3 for now. PARAKEETS ROCK! :D  ;) :D

I have 2. My boy has crippled feet which i noticed a couple days after I got him. When i went back to the pet store to ask they said to bring him in to be destroyed and they would give me a new one. I was horrified!!! I kept him and put up with his quirkiness. He needs a nightlight on because he will often fall off his perch in the middle of the night and then both start flapping around. Now they can find their perches easily.

I have a small bowl of water in there for their baths. They love it!!! I have it placed at the top of the cage on their mettal platform.

We have one parakeet, our very first bird ever, and we love her. She is a very pretty purple and chirps, she is still a baby and we are still training her to "step up" onto our finger and "step down" back to her perch. So far she has not tried to bathe and does not like to leave the cage unless we make it a quick trip and bring her back safely.

If your bird does not like to bath you could try getting a new spray bottle and putting lukewarm water into it then misting your bird gently. Make sure you don't freak the bird out let her see the mist come out a few times then gently spray her while talking softly to her. if my bird doesn't bath soon I am going to get her a spray/misting bottle.

My mom has two zebra finches and they bathe everyday at three o'clock then take thier time fluffing and preening while singing away. Then mom has to get a clothe and wipe up the surrounding area while they look on innocently, it's so cute. I don't know why they decided to pick three o'clock but that is when dad watches a soap opera on tv everyday so maybe they hear the music from the show and decide it's bathtime?
