  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I'm just kind of hung up on the "maturing" part because apparently, Paolini's idea of having a character mature is as follows:

Step 1: Have mentor die.
Step 2: Have character fight in battle.
Step 3: Say that aftermath of said battle doesn't affect character. Never mind that this is his first time seeing so much carnage and there are some people who can't even look at a (fake) picture of a decapitated chupacabra without having the image haunt their dreams--and these are people who've seen Passion of the Christ and Batman Begins, which are heavy on the blood and violence, respectively.
Step 4: Have character contemplate vegetarianism.
Step 5: Show character naked people. Never mind that character is 15 and seeing two naked elvish girls....well, you get the picture.

Congratulations! Your character is now mature.

 You forgot Step 1.5: Have character not notice his birthday. Btw, he's 16, so I guess Paolini figured he was old enough for the travelling freak show.

Funny. Eragon is pretty spoiled (may I cite the infamous "I want meat" incident), but he forgets his own birthday. If Paolini was any sort of realist, Eragon would remember his birthday and make everyone else remember it too.

A good point indeed. Another thought: why doesn't Eragon INFURIATE Brom? I mean, seriously. It seems like he's supposed to be a practical, sensible and wise man. Yet he doesn't seem to mind having this self-absorbed kid hanging around all the time. In fact, he seems to like it. I don't understand where that connection comes from. Did I miss something? ...Or did Paolini?

The best explanation for this conundrum I have is that Eragon is the ultimate Mary-Sue, so since Paolini is this self-absorbed kid (I'm assuming) and not everyone in real life ignores his faults, he's living out his fantasy of having everyone ignore his faults through Eragon. Therefore, Brom ignores every fault Eragon has.

That makes sense....in a twisted Paolini sort of way.

Random side note, I gave blood yesterday and while interviewing me to make sure I haven't don't anything that could mess up my blood, the person doing all these tests asked me what I thought of Eragon. I can picture it now: "Oh, you liked Eragon? Sorry, we can't use your blood.
We can't have you contaminating the poor unsuspecting person who might be receiving it."
