As I travelled to the community church I was playing at at the time, I looked at all of the nice houses that were bulit by those that had worked all their lives in the states and now had returned to the motherland to retire and pass their last years.
I was aware that some of these people were living alone in their houses for a variety of reasons, and as I rode through I remembered that keeping in contact with family was not an option but a necessity, to keep the family at arm's length would destine one to living and dying alone and forgotten.
At the same time I was getting ready for a sermon that had to do with the edification of the church. When I realized that scripture stated that we all edify, the concept took on a whole new meaning.
Edification is really a practical matter, you have a foundation that follows the floor plan, you decide every aspect, you design the house according to it's use, everything that gets built is based on your decisions. The scripture mentions building materials which refer to your giving it your best to make sure it stands the test of time.
A builder has to plan, he/she has to think about the future, anticipating the future use of his/her building, living only in the present will cause problems in the future.
This applies to both the laity and the ministry, when you have someone that has only one topic, you only get one type of building as a result.
Dealing with the totality of the bible is what produces results, coming to terms with the good, the bad and the ugly is the healthiest approach to understanding the many undercurrents revealed in scripture, it results in many mysteries being explained in the course of time. It also results in a building that will cover all needs in the future.
It's the only thing that will keep your palace from becoming a prison.
