UN-REACHED PEOPLES
MUSLIM GUJAR
What Are Their Beliefs?
A majority of the Gujur are Muslims; however, those who are Hindus have greatly influenced the others. The Gujur may worship a "family deity" and observe some of the traditional Hindu feasts such as Holi.
Because the Muslim Gujur share Hindu customs, they are not generally accepted by other Muslims. Nevertheless, in their desire for a unified front against the Hindus, the Muslim Kashmiri have agreed to accept the nomadic Gujur Muslims who recently entered Jammu and Kashmir.
What Are Their Needs?
The Gujur have long been hidden away and forgotten by most of the world. The governments of the countries where they live can be hostile to any form of proselytizing; and so government restrictions apply, but most of the time Christians can follow their own religion. There are more problems from family members than from the government.
Prayer Points
Ask the Lord to send forth laborers to share Christ with the Gujur.
Pray that God will encourage the small number of Gujur believers and give them a vision to reach their own people.
Ask God to send Christian teachers to live and work among the Gujur.
Ask the Holy Spirit to soften the hearts of the Gujur so that they will be receptive to the Gospel.
Pray that God will open the hearts of governmental leaders to the Gospel.
JAT HANS
What Are Their Beliefs?
Though Jats were all originally Hindu, some Jat gotras have converted to Islam. Most of these Islamic Jats trace their conversion to Sufi saints like Baba Fariduddin Ganjshakar in the 12th century. Muslim Jats have their own culture, which includes poems, songs, and stories of romance.
Though Muslim Jats are Sunnis, they are known to have a strong tradition of worshiping many local saints. Jats observe many ceremonies, especially rites of passage such as circumcision and initiation into adulthood. Like many other South Asian communities of good standing, Muslim Jats have a negative view of Christianity, because they associate it with people of low status.
In most of the Muslim world, people depend on the spirit world for their daily needs since they regard Allah as too distant. Allah may determine their eternal salvation, but the spirits determine how well we live in our daily lives. For that reason, they must appease the spirits. They often use charms and amulets to help them with spiritual forces.
What Are Their Needs?
Hans Jat people need to put their hope and identity in the King of kings and Lord of lords.
Prayer Points
Pray for loving, anointed workers to go to the Hans Jat people, and for their hearts to be ready to receive their Savior.
Pray for families of believers loving and serving others to grow reproducing churches.
Pray for a chain reaction of families reaching families that results in thousands of new believers who share their faith with others.
Pray for grace and truth expanding into their entire society as all believers learn to love others.
PASHTUN NAZIR
What Are Their Beliefs?
Although most Pakistani Christians are from a former low-caste background and speak Punjabi, some have overcome social, language and prejudice barriers to reach out in love to their Muslim neighbors. Despite growing anti-Western and anti-American sentiment, Pakistan still offers opportunities for investment, learning, business and service. Many expatriates have enjoyed the renowned hospitality and friendship of Pashtuns and other Pakistani peoples.
What Are Their Needs?
Pashtun peoples have tremendous potential. If they allowed the Holy Spirit to transform their families and communities, they and those around them would be blessed beyond measure.
Prayer Points
Media. Pray for the production and distribution of all forms of media in the Pashto language, including literature, videos, music, movies, radio, websites, and social media. The demand and response have increased!
Scripture. Pray for Bible translations in progress!
Laborers. Pray for more workers to serve among the Pashtun people—in education, business, healthcare, development, and other professional areas!
Believers. No one knows how many Pashtuns are following Jesus. Believers have sewn seeds far and wide. The greatest barriers to faith are social and cultural. Pray for God's Spirit to strengthen and protect new believers and to empower their lives and witness.
Pray for an unstoppable Holy Spirit directed movement to Christ among every Pashtun clan that will abundantly bless them in every way.
SHIN
What Are Their Beliefs?
Centuries ago, the area of northern Pakistan was primarily Buddhist. Later, Buddhism was replaced by Hinduism. However, around 1000 A.D. , the Islamic faith spread to the region. Today, the vast majority of the people are Sunni Muslim. Traces of traditional, pre-Islamic beliefs still linger for many of them. Some of the tribes practice shamanism. Members of these tribes believe that there is an unseen world of gods, demons, fairies, and ancestral spirits. They depend on shamans (priests or priestesses) to cure the sick by magic, communicate with the gods, and control events.
What Are Their Needs?
The northern tribes have many health problems due to poor water quality and poor nutrition. Portable drinking water, sewage disposal, and drainage facilities are only available for a small segment of the population. Dentists and doctors are desperately needed among these groups. Educational facilities are also lacking and the need for qualified teachers is great.
Prayer Points
Pray for gospel materials like the JESUS Film and gospel recordings to become widely distributed in this part of Pakistan.
Pray for a Holy Spirit-driven spiritual hunger among the Shin people that will only be satisfied by Jesus Christ.
Pray for a family-based movement to Christ among the Shin people of Pakistan.
